This is just a fan-write of how the ideal DCEU should have been. Unlike Marvel, we aren't doing phases, but rather archs. The first arch is Darkseid and the lead up to facing the villain. Also keep in mind I am not a very good writer (vocab grammar may be a bit off, didn't edit it), this is mainly just to give a slate and rough outline of the stories and tones of each film. If people enjoyed this I would be more than happy to write up the next arch... Injustice. 2013 Man of Steel Directed by Zack Snyder The movie is fine as it nothing much to change. 2014 Wonder Woman Directed by PattDirey Jenkins Similarly, wouldn't change much just moving the release date. 2015 Aquaman Directed by James Wan
This film would focus solely on Arthur's origins at the lighthouse, the larger world of Atlantis would ideally unfold slowly similar to the wizarding world in Harry Potter.
Arthur discovers his place as the rightful king of Atlantis and the film should be a political thriller of sorts as there is a power struggle to determine the rightful ruler of Atlantis.
Black Manta would not appear in this movie, the movie should be more contained and build towards a Civil War and uprising led by Arthur to overthrow the Ocean Master to take the trident and become King of Atlantis.
2016 Man of Tomorrow *(*Man of Steel Sequel; Batman v Superman) Directed by Zack Snyder This movie would basically be Batman v Superman, but all told from Superman's perspective. The biggest problem with the original film was that Batman stole the show from Superman, ultimately making him a B-player in his own universe. Realigning the story as a Man of Steel sequel introducing Batman allows for a fresh perspective of Batman that we haven't seen in earlier incarnations and also for Superman to be humanised and made to be more likeable.
So after the events of Man of Steel, Clark has become a polarising figure in the public's eye. Lex Luthor (played by Billy Zane) is quite skeptical of this new Superman and looks for ways to destroy him, he discovers the kryptonite residue in the Indian ocean and realises that it can pierce kryptonian skin once he tries it on Zod's corpse, which has been acquired by LexCorp. Luthor has also been using Victor Stone (a deceased football player) as dummy piece for Project Cyborg and seeks to weaponise this against Superman.
Meanwhile, Clark who is unaware of this and is being hunted by vigilante who's origins are slowly unveiled, as Clark begins to investigate of this vigilante in Gotham, known as the Batman.
We now see the story through Batman's (Bruce Wayne) perspective and his fear for what Superman could become. He comes to know of Lex Luthor's possession of kryptonite when he attends a function at LexCorp, at which he meets Diana Prince, a historian.
Once Bruce discovers the whereabouts of the kryptonite he plans a heist to steal the substance . Once the kryptonite his stolen he begins to construct a heavy armour suit to withstand the punches.
It also revealed in a conversation with Alfred that Batman had two Robins (Dick and Jason). Dick Grayson left him as he grew older and has not contacted Bruce since, Jason was brutally murdered by the Joker and this Batman has nothing to lose and feels inclined to kill Superman if need be.
The Batman v Superman fight happens, ending with Bruce almost killing Clarke but then sees the image of his parents dying and how he now is the killer who is taking the life of a man. He flees the scene as Clarke is unconscious.
A few days later there is a fire accident at LexCorp and Superman flies to the rescue, however this is a trap and he is attacked by Victor Stone the Cyborg who has kryptonite laced into his metal shell. Superman takes punishment from Cyborg and is being defeated by the humanoid. All of sudden a vehicle runs Cyborg over and Batman comes to Clark's rescue.
Lex watches in disappointment as the duo defeat his creation and he is arrested for launching the cyborg super-weapon. Diana watches these events on the news and smiles. Bruce takes Victor Stone under his wing and plans to have him reprogrammed at Wayne Enterprises.
Suicide Squad (One-off Movie) Directed by David Ayer Refer to this video as this is basically how I would have done it :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uahcsm-_8LI 2017 Justice League Directed by Zack Snyder I saw the Justice League rewrite done by Nando v Movies and I really liked the idea of the Legion of Doom being the main antagonists for the film. It avoids the aliens cliche (because we are getting a lot more of those) and also we have never seen a superhero film with a team of villains (..done well). So I like that idea and obviously there are few changes as Superman is alive, but I would like to leave the Justice League rewrite a little more vague and concentrate on the overall arch (as many people have already done fan-written the Justice League movie). So refer to this video if you want a cool pitch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfsHiP6z9wg At the end of the film, I would ultimately have the League defeat the Legion and solidify themselves as the Justice League, ending with Wayne Enterprises launching a Space Station into orbit which will eventually become the Watch Tower. 2018 Batman: Under the Red Hood Directed by Matt Reeves Not much to change from the animated movie, just a faithful adaptation. Some key events though for those who don't know:
Jason Todd (Josh Hutcherson) is revealed not to be dead and his killing Gotham's criminals under the alias of the Red Hood, Dick Grayson (played by Robert Pattinson) returns from exile as Nightwing once he hears of the Red Hood as he immediately knows its Jason.
Meanwhile, Tim Drake (also a vigilante, played by Asa Butterfield), an intern at Wayne Enterprises also begins to dig deeper into te records and tries to solve the case of the Red Hood as his neighbour (a drug dealer) was slaughtered by the Red Hood. He is later recruited as the third Robin.
Film ends with Jason being arrested (but escaping prison) and the Joker is admitted into a maximum security ward at Arkham.
A Flash From Two Worlds (Flash movie) Directed by Rick Famuyiwa
The movie tells the story of a Barry Allen from a possible future coming back in time to kill a young version of Eobard Thawn and other villains, the Reverse Flash, this is because Thawne creates a whole in the space time continuum in the future which leads to the end of the universe.
The current Barry Allen must find and protect Eobard from his future self. The film ends with the future Barry dying and present Barry successfully saves Eobard, but he feels the guilt of maybe having doomed the universe.
This movie plays as a twisted version of Terminator 2, Barry must protect the younger version of a future villain (basically the plot of the Looper) and other adversaries of his. The adult version of this child returns in future installments of the Flash series. Wonder Woman II Directed by Patty Jenkins Basically a straight forward comic book movie with Cheetah (played by Alexandra Dadarrio) as the main antagonist. The film is set in a completely in a jungle as Diana is undertaking an investigation for a historical artefact, her expedition team is being hunted by a forest creature by the name of cheetah. Diana must protect he team from the threat. Think along the lines of Predator meets Conan the Barbarian. 2019 Aquaman: Manta Rising Directed by Gore Verbinski A movie more adventurous along the lines of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Atlanteans are discovered by a group of pirate led by Black Manta (played by Idris Elba), they begin kidnapping citizens of the city and plan on selling them to companies like LexCorp for research, in order to make profit.
This begins a war between the citizens of Atlantis and the pirates (who have access to advanced weaponry stolen from Wayne Enterprises).
The film ends with pirates being defeated and Black Manta is handed over to Arkham Asylum once Bruce discovers that he is there was stolen WE equipment. Arthur finds out about Black Manta's son (who is now orphaned because his father is imprisoned), Arthur takes the boy (Kaldur played by Caleb McLaughlin) under his wing.
Shazam! Directed by David Sandberg Change nothing, the movie is great as it is. 2020 Justice League Doom Directed by Alex Garland This movie takes a deeper more existential turn for the DCEU, as Vril Dox (Brainiac played by Doug Jones) arrives on Earth, alone, a space craft the size of Metropolis. The movie should tackles themes of aliens and the larger purpose of the universe, thus Alex Garland would be the ideal director to layer the movie with existential subtext.
Brainiac's arrival also signals the entry of Martian Manhunter, a member of an ancient race from Mars (billions of years ago before human life on Earth) whose entire population and plant was 'collected' by Brainiac and stored on his spacecraft.
Brainiac begins to manipulate the governments of countries to form one large dictatorship so he can then add Earth to his record of planets which he has now enslaved.
The League accompanied by Martian Manhunter are now targeted by UN who are under Brainiac's influence, the arrival of Brainiac prompts Shazam to now also join the fight against the corrupted governments of Earth who now have their armies targeting the Justice League who are not bowing to this alien overlord.
A rogue CIA agent under the code name of Black Canary also leads a rebellion of rogue soldiers to help the league on the grounds.
The final act has the League fighting in several different locations, the UN is launching a strike on Metropolis as the civilians did not conform to Brainiac's demands due to resistance led by the league. Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg aim to stop the strike. Superman, Shazam, Manhunter and the Flash infiltrate spacecraft to find what Brainiac's true intentions are.
Batman along with Black Canary, Nightwing and Robin are holding non-lethal ground warfare against the troops to aid the civilians to safety from the strike.
It is finally revealed that Brainiac's plan was not to enslave Earth but tp protect it from a larger threat... Darkseid, he is the only person that can save planet Earth and all the other planets from Darkseid. Therefore he is collecting and storing the populations of the planets on his craft in order safeguard them from the impending doom of Darkseid. Superman tries to reason with him Brainiac but he will not listen, this leads to a sort of moral debate between Clark and Vril Dox as they discuss what it means to be an alien and the means which must be undertaken for the greater good (foreshadowing for a possible Injustice storyline).
Superman orders Shazam, Manhunter and Flash to leave the spacecraft immediately. Finally he turns himself into a solar flare and destroys Brainiac's ship along with Brainiac.
The strike is stopped and the UN is evaluated for there decisions. Due to the large flare that he released Clarke has lost his powers and must regain them slowly through the heat of the yellow sun, it may be a while before he gets back to his peak.
Canary, Manhunter and Shazam are all inducted into the league.
Green Lantern Corps Directed by Shane Black
An ex-marine by the name of Jon Stewart is recruited by the Green Lantern Corp and tasked to find Hal Jordan, a rogue Green Lantern who is being hunted by the Red and Sinestro Corps alike.
Stewart's team consists of Kilowog (Hal's ex partner) and Soranik. The movie plays as a space buddy cop film as Jon Stewart and Kilowog clash with Soranik doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It is revealed that Hal is at Odym a home base of the Blue Lantern corp.
Once the team finds Hal, the planet is stormed by the Red Lantern Corps and a Battle ensues. The team along with Hal flees and it is revealed that the Guardians gave Hal an order to strike a Sinestro Corps base planet which was also home to many oppressed innocents.
The team decide to make their way to the planet and help the citizens escape from the Sinestro's clutches.
The film ends with the civilians successfully being secured and Jon Stewart returns to Oa and tells the guardians that Hal Jordan was killed in the battle to save the citizens. But Hal has returned to Earth and has refrained from using the ring to avoid being traced.
2021 Man of Krypton Directed by Zack Snyder The final instalment of the Man of Steel Trilogy, Clark has to cope with not having his powers and trying to prove to himself that even without his powers he is still Superman.
Lois and Clarke get married, in the early stages of the movie and their romance is explored in further detail and is the focal point of the film
More details are learnt about Darkseid and what he is after (the mother boxes, two which are on Earth at Themyscira and Atlantis). Darkseid has sent a beast (Doomsday) to eliminate Superman, whom he has heard of and believes is a great threat to his goal.
The final act is a battle between Doomsday and Superman (who has gained some of his powers back, enough to hold his own for a while), ultimately Clark is able to kill Doomsday but at the cost of his own life.
The world unites to commemorate Superman, the League has Superman's corpse launched into the Sun in hopes that he will one day return.
Fate (One-off Movie) Directed by Denis Vilenuve Origin story of Dr Fate, follows a sort of supernatural thriller genre (similar in tone to a movie like Enemy) Red Hood (TV Series) The series documents the adventures of Red Hood; Season 1 (2021): Red Hood adventures with Arsenal (played by Liam Hemsworth; ex-sidekick of, the now deceased, Green Arrow) Season 2 (2022): Cassandra joins Jason and Roy (Arsenal) 2022 Batman: Night of the Owls Directed by Michael Mann
This film take places all within the span of one night as Bruce and the family discovers there is a plot to kill all of Gotham's most important figures by the Owls.
Jason returns to help Bruce take on the Owls, when he hears that Bruce is also a target. The Bat Family is a joined by a new member, Cassandra Caine (the Huntress played by Ella Jay Basco), who is a mute and was inspired by Batman to stand for something.
It is soon discovered that leader of the Court of Owls is Bruce Wayne's half brother Thomas Wayne Jr (played by Matt Damon).
The story is pretty much the same as the comic book counter-part, except it takes place all in one night which creates a greater sense of tension and urgency. Wonder Woman III Directed by Patty Jenkins The final instalment of the Wonder Woman trilogy is a psychological thriller which dissects the Wonder Woman mythos as she is being tormented by Dr Psycho. The film is similar to Inception as a lot of the movie take place inside Diana's mind, blurring the lines of reality and nightmares, the death of Superman also has a profound impact upon her. A Flashpoint Paradox Directed by The Spierig Brothers
Barry begins dating Iris West and Wally is introduced into the foray.
One night, the Reverse Flash attacks Barry which leads to a chase between the two speedsters as they battle through time at maximum speed. This results in Barry breaking the sound barrier and landing in an alternate present time (the result of Barry and Eobard fighting through various times, causing a ripple affect).
In this alternate time, Thomas Wayne (Jeffery Dean Morgan) is Batman, Victor Stone is the central protector (basically Superman's role), Superman never came to Earth, Wonder Woman died instead of Steve Trevor (died of old age) and the Mera is the Queen of Atlantis (after killing Arthur for the Throne and has waged war against Themyscira).
Barry must work with Batman and Cyborg to get back to his time whilst there is an ongoing war.
Minus these changes, the film plays out quite similar to the comic book. 2023 Aquaman: Return of Atlan Directed by James Wan
This instalment sees Atlan (Arthur's father) returning from the dead to take back his Throne, Arthur does not want to fight against his father and willingly gives his throne to him
It is slowly revealed that Atlan's intentions are very petty and racist, his intentions are to rid Atlantis of half-bloods. Thus he exiles Arthur and begins killing citizens of Atlantis who are not pure his target becomes Kaldur.
Kaldur escapes Atlantis and sets out to find Arthur, whilst he is being hunted by Atlan's soldiers
The remainder of the movie is a father-son style movie as Arthur and Kaldur become closer, whilst (ironically) he is becoming more distant to his own father, Atlan
There is a final battle where Kaldur and Arthur team up to defeat Atlan in the middle of the Sahara desert so that water cannot be summoned (as Atlan is more powerful at controlling water)
Justice League Apocalypse Directed by Matt Reeves
The League is still recovering from the loss of its greatest soldier, Superman. J'onn (Martian Manhunter) detects a large alien fleet entering the solar system, headed towards Earth.
Diana is able to deduce that the fleet is Darkseid, returning to Earth to claim his mother boxes. A few thousand years ago Themyscira had to fend of Darkseid, but they had the help of Zues, now they had no one (not even Superman)
Hal Jordan ring also warns him of the threat leading him to Jon who is the guardian of the Watch Tower. This leads to an emergency signal sent out to all the league members, Hal can still not put on his ring as it will compromise his location to the Green Lantern Corps (who think he is dead).
The League is united but Shazam does not answer the emergency signal and his whereabouts are unknown
Darkseid finally arrives to Earth and demands that the mother boxes are surrendered to him, which the Justice League refuses. This results in an attack on the Watch Tower during a crucial meeting with all the members. Everyone is able to flee but they are scattered.
Diana goes back to Themyscira to protect the mother box. Bruce, Barry and J'onn go to Atlantis to help Arthur protect the mother box in Atlanta. Black Canary is under the care of Dick and Tim at the Batcave, after sustaining injuries in the Watch Tower Attack. Hal Jordan remains at Star City contemplating whether to join the fight and risk revealing his location to the Corps, or to remain hidden.
Final act takes place in Atlantis, heavy casualties occur and ultimately Arthur is killed in a one on one tussle with Darkseid. His final act as King of Atlantis is to give his trident to Kaldur, who is now the new Aquaman.
Hal feels guilty for not joining the fight, Bruce confronts him about his actions and how they resulted in the scourge of Atlantis.
Darkseid now has one mother box and his sights are set upon Themyscira.
2024 Shazam! v Black Adam: Dawn of Fate Directed by Evan Goldberg The Shazam films should be positioned as the self aware stories of the DCEU (thus the title). This movie is similar to Thor Ragnarok in tone. Its an inter-dimensional adventure, where two larger than life beings battle it out, Doctor Fate is also introduced in the film. The purpose of this movie is to explain why Shazam is absent in Justice League Apocalypse (he has been sucked into an inter-dimensional gladiator match by Black Adam; who is from an alternate dimension). This movie ends with Doctor Fate and Shazam tag teaming Black Adam, defeating him. However, the two beings are now lost in some abstract dimensional reality. Justice League War Directed by Matt Reeves The final chapter of the Darkseid Saga.
All hope is lost after the events of Justice League Apocalypse, the world is in tatters and the League is not sure whether they have the power to fend of Darkseid and protect the second Mother Box.
Diana rallies for Bruce's help in order to make Arthur's death meaningful, she proposes that all the active members help her fight and protect Themyscira. Bruce argues that she did not help defend Atlantis and debate ensues amongst the members of the League.
Hal Jordan appears with his ring on and offers his hand in the fight, after some debate and argument the League is finally on the same page and the decide to gather everyone (; Batman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, The Flash, Black Canary, Nightwing, Red Robin/Robin, Red Hood, Huntress, Cyborg, Aquaman/Kaldur and Wonder Woman).
The team is gathered at Atlantis and our heroes stare down Darkseid's fleet across the horizon of Themyscira. It is a bright and luminscent day, contrary to the Battle of Atlantis.
A space craft suddenly lands on Themyscira, out come Jon Stewart, Kilowog and Soranik. Jon Stewart tells Hal that he was sent by the Guardians to protect Earth (and also bring in Hal Jordan when the job was done), the Lanterns share a smile.
The Battle begins and all hell breaks lose, the parademons are sent first by Darkseid as means of weakening he front line with expendable troops. Kaldur and the Atlanteans try to stop the parademons from reaching the island through Naval Warfare.
The frontline soon begins to fall and Darkseid makes his way on to the island and begins wrecking havok. Hal Jordan makes a stand and lasts 2-3mins with Darkseid before he is killed.
The members of the league are knocked away and the only member left standing is Tim (the youngest), it looks like it is the end for him. All of sudden Darkseid is swept of his feet and rammed through the ancient structures of Themyscira (he doesn't know what hit him). Darkseid is finally dropped and he looks up to see... Superman. The League is in awe and everyone smiles. Bruce and Clark share a moment of eye contact and a reassuring smile.
Darkseid and Superman brawl whilst Bruce and Diana decide that the Mother Box must be destroyed.
Superman is ultimately overpowered by Darkseid who is channeling the power of the Mother Box. Darkseid makes his way to the citadel with the mother box, he dispatches Wonder Woman quite easily and turns to see the Mother box missing. He turns around to look for it but he is suddenly run over by the Batwing, piloted by Bruce.
Bruce has attached the Mother box the Batwing and has activated self destruct mode. He flies at full speed towards the mother ship of the fleet. And the fleet is destroyed, but at the cost of Bruce's life.
Darkseid watches with horror as his dream explodes before his eyes (he is now weaker as he is not channelling the power of of the mother boxes), he is suddenly stabbed through the head by Kaldur with the trident... Darkseid is dead.
The League has a funeral for Bruce and he is hailed a hero, Clark swears an oath on Bruce's grave never to let something of the sort occur again. He was never able to thank Bruce for saving his life (countless time). The film ends with a final shot of the bat signal as the Dick, Jason and Tim look into the sky.
THE END (OF THE DARKSEID SAGA)... INJUSTICE is only now beginning

2019.09.26 04:54 yuccuTwo Seasons Into FM19...Never Played Before...Some Thoughts...and a Question.
First, let me say that up until last month I had never played any FM ever. I subscribed to the subreddit many moons ago after I saw an interesting narrative pop up on the front page. It's the same reason I subscribe to Eve, but have never played the game. I like a good story. I'm 38 and have been playing all the EA games in career mode since I was at tech school in the Air Force way back in 2002. Nothing like staying up late in the dorms playing NCAA03, Madden, or FIFA. Obviously haven't played NCAA in a bit and haven't personally purchased a copy of Madden since 2015, but FIFA has lived on in my house. I usually create my two kids and, now that my son is going on six, we play together. He's a nut for soccer. Still, the game is pretty stagnant and the AI all but guarantees an inevitable return to glory for whatever real-world shit show you are trying to save from the bottom of League One. I'm a die-hard Cityfan (my fandom dates back to our first year back in the premier league, so no fair weather here), but there is no sport in playing as City. Since I don't like playing in a generic stadium, I usually picked Sunderland. Over the last two years I've actually become more than a fan. I follow the team, check the scores online (they're rarely on television in the states, though every once in a while I'll randomly find a recording on the DVR), and frown when I see they failed to promote. Anyways, enough about how I played FIFA and kind of like Sunderland. This summer XBone released the beta for GamePass on PC. I wasn't going to add it to my account, since I rarely play anything more than Minecraft on my Surface Book 2, but I saw FM19 was included. I always wanted to play the game, but never wanted to pay the full price. Despite the crap looking screen shots and cheesy looking bug-eye faces (they seem a lot better in FM19), the game itself always intrigued me. A friend described the game to me as "200 excel files with a football match simulator attached." This greatly appealed to my inner bits, since in a former life I was an Air Force linguist and intelligence analyst at NSA, and now I'm the Director of Public Policy and Community Programs for a cannabis start-up, and Government Affairs Manager for a digital manufacturing innovation lab. Though, just because he had me at Excel didn't mean I wanted to spend $60. Well, I did the math. I figured with Game Pass, I could trial the game and it would only cost me a few extra bucks a month. If I hated it, I could quit anytime. FM is not just "200 excel files with a football match simulator attached," it's also comes with an auto-injector filled with heroin. I have no idea how long ago I downloaded the game. Mid-August? I haven't turned it off since. The first few days were chock full of learning the game and making random mistakes. I chose Sunderland as my first team w/ some RP on my part. A 38 year old former player and American international whose last stop was in Sunderland. They liked me so much when I retired they gave me the job. JFC this game's learning curve is huge. I didn't realize I had accidentally fired more than a few qualified staff members after being prompted to hire new staff. Just because it says we could use an U23 assistant coach doesn't mean I didn't already have one. My bad gents. My bad. I also did not realize when I subbed a player in, I should click on him in the tactics window and set his position to one he was actually qualified for. It's not like FIFA where a ST is a ST is a ST. Don't tell that to my Poacher or Advanced Forward. That first year in League One was an utter a slog. I was 5-5-5 after 15 games. Sunderland starts with a ton of injured players. Superstud O'Nien played every single position in my 4-2-3-1 formation besides Striker. I brought in TJ Eyoma and Kayne Ramsay on loan and purchased Denis Adeniran for £ 215k. After Charlie Wyke went down with a severely pulled ankle two days before the transfer window, I brought in Domnic Samuel for £ 235k as a just in case. We started to surge once everyone came back off injury. Will Grigg played second fiddle to Kaziah Sterling for most of the season. Sterling quickly jumped to 20 goals during two sequential 10 game unbeaten streaks, but then faded and only had one goal the rest of the season. Grigg stepped up with 6 during that final span. We promoted because Max Power literally took the last 10 games of the season over. He went from super-sub to Max "Fucking-Cattermole has 9 red cards, so I guess it's up to me" Power, assisting 80% of every goal scored in the last 10 games. He also had 7 goals in that time period. Honeyman, Watmore, and Gooch all stepped up. Sterling choked, which made it extra fun when I asked him to stay on for a year and he was all "I have better opportunities at my home club." He sniffed the grass twice the next season. In the end we placed second in League One behind Charlton Athletic. They won their last five games to win the title. It wasn't a sure thing for us, as we didn't secure the automatic promotion until the very last game...on goal differential (we were stellar on offense and solid top 10 on defense). I love the lack of control, especially as it applies to crafting the story behind a season. We were pegged to win the whole damn thing and came up short. I blame Kaziah. Season Two in the Sky Bet Championship started with everyone predicting "Sunderland will be in League One next year." I figured, with almost £ 20m in my transfer budget, I'd at least get to mid-table. Ollie Watkins was my #1 target. £ 6.25m later (and every promise under the sun), he was my first big move. Then I shored up my defense by bringing in Connor Randall (£ Free), Greg Taylor (£ 2.9m), Eric Palmer-Brown (£ Loan), and Joel Pereira (£ Loan) to man the sticks instead of an aging Jon McLaughlin. I bought Jon Swift (£ 3.8m) specifically because he could play either in the midfield or right behind the striker. This worked out perfectly when some folks dropped due to injury and Honeyman stepped up as CAM. I also bought Zach Clough (£ 1.2m) as a backup striker because Samuel blew his knee out in the first five minutes of the first fucking game. It was even funnier because I had sold Wyke just the day before. Clough knock in 10 as we surged to from 16th place after 11 games to 2nd place by game 22. We only dropped out of the top-3 once during the remainder of the season. West Brom choked down the stretch and squandered a 10 point lead. We won the Championship in the final game by smashing of Charleton. I saw the notification "Sunderland moved into 1st place" or whatever with 10 minutes left and we we're up 3-1. We won 5-1. Fucking epic! So, now the dilemma. Chelsea interviewed me. They went with Allegri. Tottenham interviewed me, but picked Rafa instead. Valencia interviewed me and offered me a job. My character speaks Spanish, so no big change. Do I stay with Sunderland with a last place projected finish, a 1000-1 shot to win the league, and £ 38m to play around with...or bounce to Valencia, some Euro Cup soccer, and a team with one player worth as much as my entire roster? I extended a week and worked on Sunderland like I wasn't leaving. Now I have to decide. A resurgent Sunderland or opportunity in Valencia? I don't know what to do, but I know I love this game.

Remember Johnny Valentine died in the last issue but Dave didn't have time to write up a proper obituary? Good lord, does he correct that this week. This sucker is LONG. Valentine died nearly broke and Dave rants about how the wrestling industry doesn't take care of its own after they're done giving their bodies to it. Valentine's long-time rival Wahoo McDaniel is in poor health but he's been fortunate to collect a pension from his years playing football for the AFL which was later absorbed into the NFL. Other wrestlers are part of the Screen Actor's Guild due to having small movie roles, which provides them insurance and things like that. Valentine was paralyzed from the waist down in the plane crash back in the 70s (Dave says these days, if that happened, he likely would have collected some big legal settlement but that didn't happen back then) and the medical bills piled up and left him broke. Dave includes a quote from Ric Flair here, talking about how messed up it is that the business doesn't have a union or health insurance or something to prevent this from happening to past stars. Dave talks about all the heartbreaking stories we never hear about from these older wrestlers who fade into obscurity after retirement and end up destitute because there's no pension, no 401K, so on and so forth and the savings they build up during their career goes away pretty quick when it's time for these old guys to get those knee replacements and neck surgeries and whatnot with no insurance. There's a lot of quotes in here from other wrestlers here talking saying that the business abandoned Valentine, who was one of the top stars of his era and it's pretty sad. And unfortunately, little has changed in the 20 years since.
Anyway, other obituary stuff. Dave recaps a story from Lou Thesz's book about Valentine who once went to a bull-riding show and decided to try it but got thrown off. According to Thesz, the bull then charged Valentine and Thesz thought he was for sure a dead man. But Valentine stood his ground and punched the bull right in the face as hard as he could, stunning the bull long enough to make it turn away for a minute so he could escape. Valentine was notorious for being an incredibly hard hitter, legendary feuds with McDaniel, and on and on. Man....this is a REALLY long and good obituary and absolutely worth reading but I can't recap all this haha. Dave goes into detail on pretty much every major angle or moment of Valentine's career and it's incredible but it's not news and this issue is long enough already.
WWF's Backlash PPV is in the books and it was...fine. Dave almost feels like it's unfair to compare it to recent PPVs because the last few WWF PPVs have been off-the-charts awesome. This one was still good but it felt like a let-down in comparison to the last few months. Dave thinks the Benoit/Angle 30-minute submission match was good but not as great as expected and without near falls, it dragged too long. Same with the main event, good but too long. They announced it as the 18th consecutive sellout in a row in Chicago, which isn't exactly true. 17 of the last 18 Chicago shows were indeed legit sellouts, but one of those shows didn't, so it's not 18 in a row. But hey, still impressive! And at least it wasn't like the XFL, where they repeatedly announced sellouts despite most of the stadiums being 3/4 empty for every game.
Other notes from the PPV: Jerry Lynn made his TV debut on the Heat pre-show, winning the light heavyweight title from Crash Holly. Lita also worked the pre-show and Dave says it's clear they're preparing to do a Lita vs. Chyna angle for the women's title (yup, but they only had 1 match before Chyna leaves the company). Raven vs. Rhino was the sleeper match of the night, way exceeding expectations. Shane McMahon took another crazy bump from the top of the TitanTron, as he tends to do. Triple H became the 2nd grand slam champion ever (behind Shawn Michaels) having now held the World, IC, European, and now tag team titles. And the cameras missed part of the finishing sequence of the main event, leading Dave to ask, "how in the WCW does this happen?"
Jim Ross spent the past 2 weeks in meetings with WCW talent to put together the roster for the new WCW that's now expected to launch next month. As of press time, the plan is for the first episode to air on June 16th, and TNN will be bumping their "Grand Ole Opry" show to make room. Ross met with Rob Van Dam and his agent for the first time and described the meeting as very positive. Several years ago, RVD rubbed many in WWF the wrong way when he and Sabu refused to do a job on TV during the ECW invasion angle. No word on a deal being made yet, but it's looking more likely now than it did before. Ross also met with an agent who represents several former WCW guys like Booker T, DDP, Billy Kidman, Kanyon, and others. Ross made it clear that if any of these guys want to come in, they will not be offered anywhere near what WCW was paying them as far as guarantees go, but if they're successful, they will still make really make good money based on incentives and whatnot. Most of the people who have met with Ross praised him and said he's been very honest and forthcoming in the negotiations and isn't trying to fill their heads with lies about how much money they'll make and stuff like that. Plus WWF wrestlers earn a portion of gate money and WWF runs a lot of successful live shows, although the relaunched WCW brand won't be running house shows, at least not at first, so that's obviously something they have to take into consideration.
Booker T has close to 2 years left on his WCW deal, at $750,000 per year and would be giving up a lot of money if he accepts a buy out to sign with WWF, but he's made it clear to people around him that he still wants to go. WWF has pretty much given up on pursuing Goldberg because he's got nearly 3 years left on his WCW deal and will make more than $6 million by simply sitting at home, and WWF has no intention of offering anywhere near the same amount. DDP has about 9 months left on his WCW deal which will net him more than $1 million but like Booker T, he's also made it clear that he wants to work for WWF even if it means losing out on some of that money in the short-term. Kidman has more than a year left on a $300,000-per-year deal so he's probably going to sit it out also. Same with Ric Flair, 2 years left on his big money deal and doesn't seem anxious to give it up. Several other wrestlers who were on 90-day contract cycles will officially become free agents in July and the biggest name among them is Rey Mysterio, who WWF allegedly has interest in but haven't spoken with him yet. All the rest will likely start working indies or in foreign promotions in Japan, Mexico, or Europe. We're beginning to see how the deaths of WCW and ECW left so many people scrambling to figure out how to put food on the table and pay their mortgages.
Ross also had meetings with Reno, Chavo Guerrero, Chuck Palumbo, and Sean O'Haire. Then he went to the UPW show that night in California and met with Nathan Jones, John Heidenreich, and former XFL player Josh Wilcox. Ross was high on Wilcox and there was talk of using him to cross-promote the XFL if they end up having a 2nd season (lol). Speaking of, around half of the XFL players have requested contract releases so they can negotiate with the NFL and several have already signed NFL deals. Wilcox is said to be pretty good in UPW, especially with his mic work. Anyway, the plan is to finalize a WCW roster in the next 2 weeks and then put together the non-wrestling crew (agents, referees, announcers, etc.) a few weeks later before the re-launch. The main names being considered for announcers are Scott Hudson, Mike Tenay, Joey Styles, Mark Madden and, believe it or not, Jerry Lawler, though he's a long-shot. Lawler reportedly still won't come back without his wife and Vince McMahon is pissed at him for the things Lawler has said and done since walking out, so there's some fences that need to be mended there. Vince is reportedly not willing to budge on bringing Lawler's wife back. The idea is to tape on Wednesdays, near whatever city Smackdown is taping in on Tuesdays, since they will use the same production crew and production trucks. The WCW group will have its own writing team, but they will work with the WWF writers to make sure they don't conflict with each other's angles (for instance, both shows promoting a major cage match during the same week or things like that).
Dave has examined the ECW chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in detail and it shows a realistic picture of what kind of shape ECW has been in during the last two years. In 1999, ECW grossed $5.8 million in income (WWF grossed $259 million while WCW grossed more than $160 million during the same year). In 2000, same kind of situation. Long story short, while many people considered ECW a strong candidate for the #2 promotion in the U.S., the reality is that the wrestling industry was pulling in roughly half a billion dollars during those years and ECW amounted to less than 1% of that market share. WWF, NJPW, WCW, and even PRIDE ran numerous single shows that grossed more than ECW did in those entire years. ECW's income drastically declined in 2000 (though not as bad as WCW's) which is interesting because that's the first year they ever had a national TV deal. The problem is, that TV deal came with enormous costs that TNN wouldn't cover and ECW essentially went broke trying to fund it themselves. ECW was owned 85% by Paul Heyman, with the Acclaim video game company owning the other 15%. At the time they folded, ECW was facing numerous lawsuits from around the country for nonpayment of bills and left tons of other unpaid bills in its wake that they weren't yet sued over. The bankruptcy filing included a list of all the people or companies ECW owed money to. Wrestlers, Heyman's family, radio stations, business partners, lawyers, travel agencies, credit card companies, loan companies, even the company that makes wrestling title belts. There was also a clear lack of comprehensive bookkeeping. On the recent Observer radio show, Tommy Dreamer talked about how some last ditch efforts to raise money for ECW failed because ECW couldn't provide any verifiable financial records. Many of the debtors listed in the bankruptcy are rounded off estimates rather than exact figures. Many wrestlers were listed as being owed money, but the amount was listed as "unknown."
Among the people/companies owed money: Acclaim is owed $1 million. Heyman himself was owed $128,000 in back-pay from money he spent out of his own pocket to keep things afloat. Heyman's father, who funded the company for many years, is owed $3.5 million while his mother is owed $226,500. MSG Cable is owed $244,000. InDemand is owed $150,000. And WWF is owed $587,500. And that's just a few of the companies. As for the performers:
William Alfonso (Fonzie) - $5,000 Scott Antol (Scotty Anton) - unknown Joseph Bonsignore (Joey Styles) - $50,480 Mike Bucci (Nova) - $4,000 Don Callis - $12,000 Lou D'Angeli (Lou E. Dangerously) - $7,000 Michael DiPaolo (Roadkill) - $21,250 Joseph Dorgan (Swinger) - unknown John Finnegan - unknown Francine Fournier - $47,275 James Fullington (Sandman) - unknown Terry Gerin (Rhino) - $50,000 Matt Hyson (Spike Dudley) - unknown Francisco Islas (Super Crazy) - $5,000 Mike Kehner - unknown Patrick Kenney (Simon Diamond) - $9,000 Tom Laughlin (Tommy Dreamer) - $100,000 Jerry Lynn - unknown James Maritato (Little Guido) - $25,000 Troy Martin (Shane Douglas) - $48,000 Jim Mitchell (Sinister Minister) - unknown James Molineaux - unknown Dan Morrison (Danny Doring) - $2,100 Peter Polaco (Justin Credible) - $7,990 Dawn Psalpis (Dawn Marie) - $9,000 Jon Rechner (Balls Mahoney) - $4,000 Ken Reininhaus (Jack Victory) - $3,000 Robert Szatkowski (Rob Van Dam) - $150,000 Yoshihiro Tajiri - $5,000 John Watson (Mikey Whipwreck) - $12,000
More bad news on the "professional wrestling is bad for kids" front, as a new study from Wake Forest found that teenagers who are wrestling fans are more likely than their peers to have violent romantic relationships. The story was picked up and carried in newspapers nationwide and basically found that a higher percentage of teens on dates are more likely to get into physical altercations on dates and be abusive in their relationships. A WWF spokesman responded saying WWF is not a children's show and that the parents should determine what's appropriate and yada yada. The usual response. Long story short, teens (particularly boys) who watch wrestling tend to be meaner and more physically abusive to girls, and it blames the way women are portrayed and demeaned every week in wrestling on TV. Interestingly enough, girls were also found more likely than boys to be violent and do drugs if they were wrestling fans. Dave breaks down all the numbers on this and discusses what it means, the flaws and cavets involved in a study like this, etc. but regardless, it's pretty clear that wrestling (and WWF in particular) seems to be having somewhat of a negative influence on teens and this isn't the first study to say so.
Throughout his tenure in WCW, Rey Mysterio occasionally headed down to Tijuana to work indie shows with other big name Mexican stars, but as of this week, Time Warner informed Mysterio he can no longer do that or he'll be in breach of his contract. And like everybody else who is still collecting big money WCW deals, he doesn't want to lose that so no more Mysterio in Tijuana for now. Dave talks about how Tijuana is a pretty hot city for wrestling right now, with several companies all running weekly shows there and drawing big crowds.
Hey there. Guess what? I have the flu! Yup, as I write this, it's Dec. 6, 2018 and I'm siiiiiiick as shit. I've been cooped up in my house, sweating through the mattress for four days now, shivering like a newborn baby lamb. But my entire body aches from laying around for 90-something hours and I just can NOT lay around and sleep anymore. Also, did I mention my wife is also sick? She caught it from me the next day so we've both been lumbering around the house like feverish zombies. And oh man, I just can't begin to tell you how delightful she is to be around right now. A sheer joy, I must say. So much so that I decided I needed a break from it, lest I be overwhelmed with gratitude. So I have come upstairs to my quiet office to reflect on how lucky I am. I'm so lucky. Right? RIGHT?!
5/29/19 Update: I'm okay now.
The AJPW vs. NOAH war has reached a new level of petty. Last week, NOAH announced that they would be holding a Jumbo Tsuruta tribute show in his hometown in June. Not to be outdone, a few days later, AJPW announced they were going to do their own Tsuruta tribute show, and they're doing it in May so they can beat NOAH to the punch. Jumbo Tsuruta was one of the biggest stars in AJPW history but he retired and left the company almost immediately after Giant Baba passed away in 1999. Tsuruta died last year right around the time AJPW was splitting up and had made it clear to everyone that he was on Misawa's side (I think it's come out in the years since that Motoko Baba pretty much fired Tsuruta right after Giant Baba died. Seems like the 2 didn't exactly get along).
When Vampiro's WCW contract expires in a few months, he's expected to start working in AJPW (yeah, he's worked a few tours there off and on over the years).
Antonio Inoki was in the U.S. a couple of weeks ago and when he came back to Japan, he showed the media 2 photos of himself with Mike Tyson, in order to "prove" that his negotiations with Tyson for a match against Naoya Ogawa weren't just a bullshit claim. Apparently Tyson and Inoki met in Las Vegas at the end of April, but Dave doesn't say if there's anything to the negotiations. One of the photos was of them shaking hands and the other was of Inoki pretending to choke Tyson (I can't find either of these pics anywhere and googling "mike tyson antonio inoki" just pulls up a billion pictures of the Muhammad Ali vs. Inoki match).
Dave talks about 21-year-old Japanese female wrestler Meiko Satomura and says she's the most promising young female wrestler in Japan right now. In case you're wondering, she's 39 now and she absolutely stole the show in this year's Mae Young Classic. So yeah, she's dope.
Stu Hart is going to have surgery to have a pacemaker put in due to his recent health issues. Former manager Sir Oliver Humperdink also had a heart bypass surgery recently.
Don Callis was on the Observer Live show and said he's going back to school to get his MBA. He said he never wants to end up in the same position he's in now, where circumstances beyond his control left him with no job. Soon after ECW folded, he was supposed to go to the Eric Bischoff-owned WCW, but then that fell through too and suddenly he had no other wrestling options (yup, he got his MBA in 2003 and now he runs Impact Wrestling).
UPW wrestlers Prototype vs. Frankie Kazarian headlined a recent indie show in Massachusetts (I'm only mentioning it because I found the match. Spoiler: LOLPROTOTYPEWINS).
Former ECW valet Elektra recently did a photo shoot for an upcoming issue of Playboy (it was actually part of a larger thing. Throughout her time in ECW, she also appeared as an extra on Sopranos in several episodes, as a stripper at the Bada Bing strip club on the show. The Playboy shoot was a "Girls of the Bada Bing" type thing, with her and a bunch of the other strippers from the show).
The lines between MMA and wrestling are even blurrier than normal in PRIDE, because this week they announced the upcoming PRIDE event later this month will feature NJPW wrestler and current IWGP champion Kazuyuki Fujita vs. NOAH wrestler Yoshihiro Takayama. To make it even more interesting, Takayama challenged Fujita to put the IWGP title on the line in the fight, but NJPW has made it clear that ain't happening on a PRIDE show in a shoot match.
UPN is reportedly looking to follow NBC's lead and no longer air XFL games, which puts the chances of a 2nd season into even further doubt. UPN only had a 1-year deal to carry XFL and it was by far the network's lowest rated show. That would leave TNN as the only network still on-board to carry XFL games and XFL president Basil DeVito has already said that the league wouldn't be able to continue if TNN is their only TV deal. Long story short: XFL is almost certainly dead.
OVW wrestler Randy Orton worked a dark match against Billy Gunn, and cut a promo before the match (here's video, but the audio is super low for some reason).
When reviewing Smackdown, Dave gets a pretty good dig in at Russo. There was a segment during the show where Grandmaster Sexay was talking about fat women. Dave jokes, "See, this proves Russo's point. WWF was allowed to call women fat and that's why they still draw sellout houses." If you recall, last year in WCW, the standards and practices people nixed a segment where Russo wanted to have Roddy Piper call a woman fat and Russo threw a fit about how the Turner S&P people were the reason why he wasn't able to turn WCW around. It's obviously a ridiculous argument because it's not like calling a woman fat was going to boost Nitro's ratings an extra 3 points or anything, but that didn't stop Russo from throwing a temper tantrum about it every time and using it as an excuse for why he totally could have saved WCW if only his oh-so-brilliant and creative mind hadn't been handcuffed by the censors.
Talent agent Barry Bloom's agency has filed a lawsuit against Chyna for failing to pay commissions they say she owes them. Bloom's agency represented Chyna for most of the last 3 years and negotiated her WWF contract as well as consulted and advised her on many outside business dealings including her autobiography, her Playboy shoot, acting gigs, etc. Chyna apparently owes them somewhere between $150,000 and $250,000. The lawsuit says she hasn't responded to numerous attempts they've made to contact her and she has refused to pay.
Jerry Lawler was recently on Mancow's radio show and made some waves by implying that Bruce Prichard and Stephanie McMahon were sleeping together and that he wouldn't care if Vince McMahon died in a car wreck. Lawler later went on his website and tried to clarify that he was just joking, but the internet picked it up as serious news and it spread like wildfire. In the website post, Lawler said everything on the Mancow interview was said in jest and that he doesn't hate Vince McMahon and was sorry if anyone took his comments about Stephanie and Prichard seriously (On his podcast, Prichard has talked about this and said it actually caused some problems at home with him and his wife because I guess he had been unfaithful in the past and his wife already didn't fully trust him. So Lawler saying this really ruffled some feathers for Prichard's home life). Lawler also said he has over a million dollars in cash and has no interest in begging for his WWF job back and said he doesn't even know if he'd go back even if Vince begged him to now. He said WWF's lawyers had told him that he's burning his bridges by talking about this so much in the media but Lawler said he's not saying anything that isn't the truth and if the truth hurts, it's their problem not his. He also said WWF wrestlers and developmental guys have been told they'll be fired if they talk to Lawler and and that some indie wrestlers had been told they'll never have a chance to work in WWF if they work any shows Lawler is booking. Lawler also thought it was bullshit that WWF pulled their developmental deal away from Power Pro Wrestling just because Lawler was part of that show, saying it was unfair to PPW and the other wrestlers there. Lawler also claimed that when he was still with WWF, he had talked to Hugh Hefner about his wife Stacy posing in Playboy, but WWF threw a fit because they felt it was their decision to decide which of their women should be in Playboy and that Lawler shouldn't be trying to pursue those kinds of deals for his wife on his own. Stacy has since tried to get a Playboy photoshoot but was rejected by the magazine. However, Playboy did send a letter basically saying that they would reconsider if their relationship with WWF were to ever come to an end, so basically, she's even blacklisted from Playboy because of WWF. He also claimed that he hasn't gotten paid for the artwork he did on Mick Foley's Christmas Chaos children's book (published by WWF) and that he's planning to write an autobiography. And finally, Lawler said he's had talks with Hulk Hogan about coming in to Memphis and working some matches together, which would likely do pretty big business.
UPW had a big show last week and Dave was there. In fact, they hosted the Observer Live show from right there in the building before the wrestling show began. Edge & Christian worked the main event, beating Frankie Kazarian and Nova. Molly Holly also came in and put over WWF developmental wrestler Victoria. The match was bad but Dave thinks Victoria has some real star potential. UPW champion Samoa Joe beat Tommy Dreamer. Later, in the big angle of the show, they had a thing where Samoa Joe and a bunch of other heels attacked Prototype and broke his arm with a chair to write him out of the promotion because he's leaving for OVW in a couple of weeks. Eventually Tommy Dreamer ran in and saved him. Fun fact: the Rock was supposed to show up as a surprise to save Prototype from the beat down because he's currently staying in Los Angeles right now taking acting classes. But some scheduling issues at the last minute kept it from happening. Another match featured the tag team of Nathan Jones and John Heidenreich. Dave thinks Nathan Jones is almost a sure thing to become a big star unless injury or his age gets in the way (he's starting pretty late, at age 30). Ring wise, he's obviously still green, but he's got the look, charisma, and all the athletic credentials and WWF had signed him to a developmental deal before he even wrestled his first match (turns out he could never quite get the whole in-ring part down and he ended up quitting WWF because he didn't like the travel). As for Heidenreich, he's got the look but not as much charisma. Other notable names on the show: Luther Reigns, Rocky Romero, and Mike Knox. Interestingly enough, Christopher Daniels was the one running the show backstage. Jim Ross and Paul Bearer were also there, scouting talents. (This paragraph has just about the most eclectic list of names ever, from all different eras and promotions that would eventually go in all sorts of weird directions, all under the same roof for one show. 2001 was wild y'all).
Big Show did an interview recently talking about a few things. Regarding his recent stint in OVW, he said Jim Cornette would fine guys if faces and heels were having dinner together and would blow a gasket if they were even in the same place, like a bar or night club, even if they weren't socializing together. After the big Louisville Gardens 30th anniversary show awhile back, there was a big party in a private room at a night club that was closed off to the public and for that one night, Cornette reluctantly allowed the wrestlers to socialize and party together but he was still pissy about it because there was a door to the room where people in the public part of the club were hanging out and for those brief few seconds every now and then when the door was open, people outside could see inside and that drove Cornette bonkers. Classic. Also, in regards to the segment that was bleeped on TV a few weeks ago, Big Show said he called Kaientai a couple of "goofs" but the people in the truck misheard it and freaked out and bleeped it, which made everyone think he had used the other racial slur, but he swears he didn't.
Boxer Butterbean did an interview talking about his WM14 match with Bart Gunn. Butterbean said that Rock and Austin had a backstage bet on who was going to win. Austin was apparently foolish enough to pick Bart and needless to say, Rock won that bet. He also said back in 1998 that Vince McMahon had made him a huge offer (near 7 figures, although Dave says he finds that hard to believe, but then again, Butterbean was a huge cult star at the time) to come in as a full-time WWF wrestler. But Butterbean turned it down because he wanted to continue boxing (since he was already making big money doing that) and Vince's offer wouldn't allow that.

Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Starring Tilda Swinton and Jeanne Balibar. Where'd You Go, Bernadette The trailer for this, particularly the music, wasn’t good. The content of the trailer shows a lot of potential though, and the book is apparently really good. Also: Richard Linklater.

Jojo Rabbit is about a young boy living during World War II. His only escapism is through his imaginary friend, an ethnically inaccurate version of Adolf Hitler, who pushes the young boy’s naive patriotic beliefs. However, this all changes when a young girl challenges those views and causes Jojo to face his own issues.

An unexpected detour causes a woman who is trying to figure out how to break up with her boyfriend to rethink her life.
Directed by Charlie Kaufman. StarringBrie LarsonandJesse Plemons.
Feel free to ignore lol After finally managing to finish this compilation, reading plots and wikis and watching trailers, I cannot believe how many good films there are coming out. This is reminding me of 2017, when I made a similar post - and 2017 was an absolutely amazing year overall, especially in light of the relative disappointment of 2018. There’s just so much promise in every category - horror, thriller, biopics, drama, action, comedy… and if you count zombie films as a genre unto themselves, then yeah, that too. Of course, I cannot wait for Tarantino’s flick. But after that it’s hard to pick ordered favourites - Knives Out, The Dead Don’t Die, Us, The Report and Luce are films I cannot wait for, but there are so many others I’m pumped for - and I haven’t even gone into the blockbusters. Speaking of… For the franchise and sequel films, I haven’t gone to the effort of adding plot and cast details. They’re huge, you’ll hear all about them anyway.

2018.05.07 15:30 Scientist34againBKAS Recommendations for the California 2018 primary (early voting starts today - ballots must be returned by June 5)
California primary Note that California has top-two primaries, which means all candidates of every party are listed on one common ballot and the top two vote getters in each race, regardless of party, advance to the general election. Below are candidates from our BKAS series that have progressive values. In general, the list contains candidates who have Bernie-like positions – Medicare-for-All, increased minimum wage, getting money out of politics, free college tuition, etc. However, not every candidate may support every position Bernie has. If you don’t know the candidate, check out their linked webpage. If you are not comfortable voting for any of these candidates, you can find others running in these races listed on the Green Papers or Ballotpedia for US Senate, Ballotpedia for US House or Ballotpedia for Governor. Also, here are links to the BKAS posts on California – California 1, California 2, California 3 and California 4, but note that they were written in late July/early August of 2017 and candidates have changed. Check the Green Papers or Ballotpedia links above for the most up-to-date list of candidates in your district. Note that due to the top-two primary system in California, races with multiple progressives will probably split the vote and may result in no progressive making it into the top two. To address this problem, I am recommending a candidate for each such race. This recommendation is based solely on my personal preference amongst the progressives. You might have an alternate preference. So, don’t feel obligated to vote for the candidate I’ve suggested. However, if you don’t have a preference, perhaps you can vote for my suggestion. If enough people do this, then we can potentially get some of these progressives into the top two. Finally, I may have missed some candidates, so if anyone else knows of a good progressive I’ve left off this list, let me know. Governor: John Chiang, Delaine Eastin, Veronika Fimbres (Green Party, write-in), Josh Jones (Green Party), Amanda Renterria, Klement Tinaj; or if you prefer a more Socialist outlook then Gloria La Riva of the Peace and Freedom Party
There are many good candidates here and it was difficult for me to pick one to suggest. In the end, I decided to recommend Delaine Eastin, because of her record and strong platform.
Audrey Denney is endorsed by Justice Democrats, but I find her education platform to be less progressive than some (no mention of free college tuition) and she talks about raising minimum wage incrementally (which doesn’t sound like she’s very committed to a substantial raise). Also, her page on infrastructure seems to suggest she may support public-private partnerships for infrastructure spending. Therefore, I am recommending Jessica Holcombe, who appeals to me because of her positions on fighting corruption and dark money in politics (plus she has other good progressive positions)
I’ve chosen to recommend Jared Huffman, because of his strong progressive voting record and for being an original cosponsor of the Medicare-for-all legislation (HR676) in Congress. Although Andy Caffrey has good positions too, he does not have the seniority in Congress that Huffman has and that seniority comes with assignments to influential committees.
CA-03: The incumbent John Garamendi is one of the original co-sponsors of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill), though he is overall not as progressive as some of the candidates listed here. CA-04:Roza Calderon (Justice Democrat and BrandNew Congress Candidate) or Robert Lawton
I recommend Roza Calderon, because I slightly prefer her positions (Lawton seems a bit hawkish in thinking that we should go into other countries to stop human rights abuses).
CA-05: The incumbent Mike Thompson is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill), although he is otherwise very conservative for a Democrat; Jason Kishineff or Nils Palsson are more progressive options
I recommend Nils Palsson, because he has a better laid out and more detailed policy positions page than Kishineff.
CA-06: The incumbent Doris Matsui is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill), although she is otherwise not very progressive; Jrmar Jefferson is a more progressive option
Another race with many strong candidates. I decided to recommend Stephen Jaffe, because he had a more detailed policy page than Hermanson or Khostajeh (who are both also excellent candidates).
CA-13:Barbara Lee CA-14: The incumbent Jackie Speier is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill), though overall she is not very progressive CA-15: The incumbent Eric Swalwell is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill), although he is otherwise quite conservative for a Democrat CA-16: No recommendation CA-17:Ro Khanna (Justice Democrat Candidate) CA-18: The incumbent Anna Eshoo supports HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill); an alternative is John Fredrich
I’m recommending Anna Eshoo, because she is an incumbent and has seniority in the party and because Fredrich’s webpage is so skimpy and lacks details on his background or stance on a number of issues
CA-19: The incumbent Zoe Lofgren is one of the original cosponsors of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) CA-20: The incumbent Jimmy Panetta is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill), although he is otherwise very conservative for a Democrat. There are two other candidates running, but information about them is skimpy and it’s hard to know what positions they support CA-21: No recommendation CA-22:Ricardo ‘Rico’ Franco is probably the most progressive option, though he is not as progressive as candidates in some other districts CA-23: No recommendation (note that Wendy Davis was previously a Justice Democrat candidate and the Justice Democrats withdrew their support from her – link). No strong progressive is running in this race CA-24: No recommendation CA-25:Bryan Caforio (Justice Democrat Candidate) or Katie Hill or Mary Pallant
I am recommending Bryan Caforio, because he has more detailed policy positions (and progressive stances) on many topics not covered by Pallant
CA-26:John Robert Nelson CA-27: The incumbent Judy Chu is quite progressive and is one of the original cosponsors of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill); her challenger Bryan Witt is also very progressive and supports Medicare-for-All
I recommend Judy Chu, because she is a strong progressive, but also an incumbent who has seniority and important committee assignments (though Witt is also very good)
I recommend Angelica Dueñas, because of her detailed and progressive stances on many issues not covered by Rey or Shammas (though they are both good candidates too)
CA-30: The incumbent Brad Sherman is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill), although he is otherwise quite conservative for a Democrat; a much better progressive in this race is Jon Pelzer
I recommend Jon Pelzer.
CA-31:Kaisar Ahmed CA-32: The incumbent Grace Napolitano is an original cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) and quite progressive. CA-33: The incumbent Ted Lieu supports HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) CA-34: The incumbent Jimmy Gomez is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) or Kenneth Mejia (Green Party Candidate)
This was another difficult recommendation. I chose to recommend Jimmy Gomez, since he’s an incumbent with a strong progressive voting record and assignments to important committees. Mejia is also quite good.
CA-35: No recommendation CA-36: No recommendation CA-37: The incumbent Karen Bass is pretty progressive and is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) CA-38: The incumbent Linda Sanchez is progressive and is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) CA-39:Andy Thorburn (Our Revolution Candidate), Stephan ‘Steve’ Cox or Sam Jammal
I recommend Andy Thorburn, because he’s endorsed by Our Revolution, has a very progressive platform.
CA-40: The incumbent Lucille Roybal-Allard is quite progressive and supports HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill); The Green Party candidate Rodolfo Barragan is another progressive option
This is another difficult decision. Lucille Roybal-Allard has a pretty progressive voting record and is one of the original cosponsors of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill). Barragan is also quite good. I decided to recommend Roybal-Allard, since she’s an incumbent with seniority in the House and committee memberships.
CA-41: The incumbent Mark Takano is quite progressive and supports HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) CA-42:Julia Peacock CA-43: The incumbent Maxine Waters is fairly progressive and is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill); another option is Green Party Candidate (and former Bernie delegate) Miguel Zuniga
I decided to recommend Miguel Zuniga, because he seems more committed to Bernie’s agenda. Though Maxine Waters did support Medicare-for-All, she only did so in late April of 2017 (when the bill was first introduced in January 2017.
CA-44: The incumbent Nannette Barragan is quite progressive and a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) CA-45:Brian Forde CA-46: The incumbent Luis Correa is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill), although he is otherwise exceptionally conservative for a Democrat; a much more progressive option is William Johnson
I recommend William Johnson, who is much more progressive than Lou Correa (one of the conservative Blue Dog Democrats in Congress)
CA-47: The incumbent Alan Lowenthal is quite progressive and is a cosponsor of HR 676 (the Medicare-for-All bill) CA-48: Note that several candidates (Michael Kotick, Laura Oatman, Stelian Onufrei and Rachel Payne) have dropped out, but are still on the ballot. Voting for one of them will not be counted. Among the remaining candidates, only Tony Zarkades is a progressive who supports Medicare-for-All CA-49:Doug Applegate (Justice Democrat Candidate) or Paul Kerr or Mike Levin or Jordan Mills (Peace and Freedom Party); also Danielle St. John is a Green Party Candidate, who is pretty progressive. But she doesn’t think Medicare-for-All can work long-term due to government corruption (though she doesn’t really have an alternative plan for healthcare)
This was another race with quite a few good candidates. I recommend Doug Applegate, because of his detailed and progressive policy stances and the fact that he is endorsed by Justice Democrats.
