More than 40 years after parts of the canal that encircled Utrecht's old town were concreted over to accommodate a 12-lane motorway, the Dutch city is celebrating the restoration of its 900-year-old moat.
The first plans for restoring the canal, or Stadsbuitengracht, which dates from the city's birth in 1122, had been made in the 1990s.
In 2017, the city opened the world's biggest bicycle park, accommodating 12,500 bikes next to Utrecht railway station.
The restored section of the canal had been filled in to allow cars better access to Utrecht's shopping district in the 1970s.
"Traffic had increased enormously," said René de Kam, a curator of urban history at the Centraal useum in Utrecht, of the decision to concrete over the canal.
"There was a kind of ring around the city, namely the canal. It was very tempting to think: what if we just asphalt it? Then the traffic problem will be solved. The shopping heart of the Netherlands should be easily accessible by car, they thought. That's where it went wrong."

2020.09.08 22:12 NouvelleOrange And I'm back to being a lowly count

This game is like chutes and ladders, really.
Started out as the count of Zeeland at the earliest start date. I had been impersonating the duchy of Kent, and Utrecht for a while now with succession crisis that were mostly averted through the centuries. I'm now close to 1070, and I'm back to being a lowly count because of a few things.
I stopped playing for the day, being quite unsatisfied in the outcome, but quite satisfied that the game decided to throw a wrench in my plans for now. I'll have to build from the ground up again.
Oh yes, if you are asking : I have a son, and my uncles all do have sons, so inheriting all my former land back does not seem to be possible for now. At least I know that my dynasty lives on in a strong manner, but it's too bad the game decided my dynasty could do without me.

What are the best teams?

The best academy is SL Benfica's, with a near-perfect score of 79 out of 80. Portuguese teams make up two out of the top three sides in this list. The Netherlands and Belgium dominate the top spots, with 7 of the top 13 sides coming from these nations.
There are some semi-professional and amateur teams that do impressively well, too. Melbourne City (NPL) are the best semi-pro team with a score of 66/80, while AKA St. Pölten have the best amateur academy, with a score of 65/80.

Methodology

This list was made using FM Genie Scout 20, and the columns Training facilities, Youth facilities, Junior coaching, and Youth Rating are all taken directly from the app. The Training description and Youth description columns reflect what is shown in the game. I have totalled the Genie Scout columns and sorted the sheet by that total.
I've included teams with a Youth decription of "Great" or higher (Youth facilities rating of 14 or higher). I've also excluded any teams from the top five divisions in Europe in an effort to keep costs down - the emphasis is on cheap, after all. Obviously "cheap" varies depending on the team you're managing, but there should be something here for everyone.
Training facilities have been included so that if you arrive a little late to the party, there is a greater chance of the newgens developing a little at the club. If you get them on day one, you can ignore this column.
Note that this list is not exhaustive. I've stuck to Genie Scout's ratings, but I know there are some teams that have "Great" or better youth facilities that I have not included. Often these are B teams, which seem to inherit their descriptions from their parent clubs. But some are like Solihull Moors, which have a Youth description of "Great" but Youth facilities value of 3, which should result in "Basic" or "Poor". Here, I've stuck to Genie Scout's values.
I am also indebted to u/Joltie for their list of youth intake dates in Football Manager 2020. These dates are listed in the right-most column. Some nations do not have an intake date, and you may not see them every produce newgens, but I've included them anyway just in case. These are marked with a dash in the intake date column.
Finally, be aware that a nation's youth rating is very important. While Pyunik sits pretty high on the list, Armenia's low youth rating means the club may never produce a quality newgen. That said, they are worth checking thanks to their top-notch facilities and very cheap asking prices.

2020.08.28 19:02 otterspace_man Locatie met uitzicht op water omgeving Utrecht?

Hi!
Alvast bedankt!

2020.08.28 10:43 Meikiepeik 21 [M4F] Netherlands - Let's chill

Hi! So this pandemic has kinda ruined my dating life. Of course I can’t go to parties and places where I would otherwise meat other girls. Because of this I’ve been spending my days reading, writing, chatting and chilling with my friends. I feel like I’m starting to miss dating. Like, real life dating, not just online. So, if anyone would be down to meet up and watch a movie or something, hit me up :)
About me: I study Dutch in Utrecht and live in a town near Rotterdam. I love to read and write and this summer I started to learn playing the guitar, since I really love listening to music and I’d love to make my own someday. I spend my free days lurking on YouTube and Reddit, sometimes watching a show on Netflix and hanging out with my friends. I can be quite shy, but if you get to know me you’d be surprised by how weird I could get.
Look forward to hear from ya :)

2020.08.25 17:54 theleithpolice X3 shipped

Just received a shipping notice with expected delivery on Thursday, so 2 weeks earlier than revised expected date, which in turn was 6 weeks beyond original expected date.
So four weeks delay from the original date - it feels like a win, although the mad wind and rain we're enduring right now is taking the edge off my enthusiasm
In UK btw, and shipped from Utrecht

2020.08.13 17:50 ThrowRA_RealGhosts A girl I'm texting believes ghosts are real

Yes, you are reading this right, a girl I've been texting for the last month believes ghosts are real. This isn't about ghosting, but about ghosts.
So, I (17M) have been rowing for about 1,5 years at my local rowing club. This girl (16F) has been around these 1,5 years, but we've never really had a chance to talk. Right before our vacation started, about a month ago, we got to talking and kept chatting literally every day since then. We haven't gotten around to seeing each other in person x since we both went on vacation in our country (The Netherlands), and rowing stops every vacation.
A couple times during our chatting she mentioned she believes in ghosts. I really didn't think too much of it at first, but yesterday afternoon we got on the topic again, and she talked about a show called Ghost Adventures. Now, I firmly don't believe in ghosts, but I'm fine if you do believe in ghosts, you do you. But here's the problem, she doesn't only believe in ghosts, she believes the things that happen in the show Ghost Adventures are actually real.
To make matters worse, not only does she believe Ghost Adventures is real, she also believes that this is the only show that is real. All other shows like Ghost Hunting are fake according to her, but Ghost Adventures is real. I tried to show her that all these shows are fake by explaining the psychology and tricks they use, but she didn't buy any of it. She says she can "disprove" all my statements with other nonsense ghost stuff, and she believes all the pseudoscience they use on the show is actual scientific research, which is why she's such a firm believer. I even persuaded her to watch two videos that respectfully disprove all the things that happen in these shows (which wasn't such a difficult thing to do since she also believes these shows are real), but she told me again she can disprove all the things that were said in these two videos (BionicPIG video, The Modern Rogue video)
All of this is really bothering me. I personally believe in science, and plan on studying physics and astronomy in two years at University Utrecht, so all these statements about "real" physics really bother me, because I know that all of this is fake and can explain how and why. To make matters worse, she told me she has a crush on me last week, and I told her I had a sort-of crush on her (I wasn't sure yet since we haven't met since we started texting). Before this whole ghost fiasco we've planned a date (I guess, we don't call it a date) for next Sunday, and while I still plan on going, I'm not sure how I feel about this while thing.
I really want to like her, but every time I text her it just pops up in my mind. Should I just see how Sunday goes? And what should I do with the whole ghost thing? Should I just let it go? I'm really lost right now.

2020.08.11 21:29 smeerkaas666 New Game looking for players - RL / TT - Utrecht

Hello, I’m starting off a new game (RL) in Utrecht and looking for new players, the intent is to play a Sandbox homebrew game, to be played every other Wednesday, using Telegram as a platform to communicate inbetween sessions and Roll20 as a backup incase RL proves to be infeasible for a particular date, but my preferred method of play is at an actual table with people snacks and dice, I’m also a fairly lazy and a terrible GM so please don’t have any high expectations or let my style ruin any future games. The idea is to have fun.
We’ll be playing Pathfinder first edition, for those unfamiliar with it, don’t worry about it, I’ll use it sparingly.
My interpretation of a Sandbox Adventure is that I’ll present a setting and inject some random encounters and that the players interaction with those encounters will generate a unique story that unfolds, meaning that the players need to be active in creating and pursuing (personal) goals and / or engaging with their fellow players and environment and that hopefully will create a fun and unique experience for everyone.
I run a PG-13 game and don’t have any requirements for players other than a commitment to the playing schedule, a willingness to be in a game with a bunch of strangers and openly address any issues they might have.
For those interested, well start off with a session 0, were we will create your character and create some connections with the other players and setup the setting we will be playing in, we will play in Dutch or English depending on wether or not we will get any non Dutch speaking players.
In Ustulav where the days are cloaked in mist and nights are ruled by terrors from the dark, a long history of war and death still has its sway on the present day.
Our campaign will begin the County of Canterwall, Ravengro a lakeside village shrouded in mist where merchants gather in the Flying Fish, a Tavern and Inn housed in a large crashed ship. Two large Chimneys from the Raffineries near the shore and the Fisheries infuse the village with the unpleasant smell of rotten fish and bitumen. The Roads outside the village are dangerous and best avoided for travellers without the blessing of the priest from a nearby temple.
The County has fallen back into the hands of Count Ghrishnack only a few years ago, after the sudden death of the Red Judge a Palantine councillor in the counties Capital Tamrivena. But Castle Ghrishnack at nearby Clover’s Crossing is in lockdown ever since an attempt was made on the Count’s Life a fortnight ago.

2020.07.25 14:20 sebapao Any tips for a bar with craft beers?

Tonight I’m going on date night and would love to get to know new places in Utrecht. Not really the typical Neude, Tivoli, Rum Club type of places but more cozy ones. I really like craft beers as well, so anything you guys can hopefully recommend?

2020.07.07 14:26 Brokich Job hunt in Utrecht, NL

Hello wonderful people of the internet, hope you’re all having a great day :)
My better half currently lives in the Utrecht area of The Netherlands. Unfortunately due to the covid situation the bar at which she worked has been forced to close for good, leaving her without a job (and months behind in rent).
We’re trying everything we can in the job search; mainly looking at minimum wage roles from cleaning to PA to admin stuff or the wider service industry, but we just can’t seem to catch a break. We have sat down and made sure her CV is up to date but we haven’t even had a call for an interview and it’s really heartbreaking for me, I can’t even imagine how she’s feeling
Anyway, my ask is for you, readers of the internet - do you know anyone in the area who could offer employment? Even if temporary, we’re both running out of options and I don’t know who else to turn to.
Thank you for reading

2020.07.06 18:55 MrBiscuitsm8 No,Pope Pius xii was not a nazi nor tried to be

The twentieth century has been marked by genocides on an monstrous scale. One of the most terrible was the Holocaust wrought by Nazi Germany, which killed an estimated six million European Jews and almost as many other victims. During this dark time, the Catholic Church was shepherded by Pope Pius XII, who proved himself an untiring foe of the Nazis, determined to save as many Jewish lives as he could. Yet today Pius XII gets almost no credit for his actions before or during the war. Anti-Catholic author Dave Hunt writes, “The Vatican had no excuse for its Nazi partnership or for its continued commendation of Hitler on the one hand and its thunderous silence regarding the Jewish question on the other hand. . . . [The popes] continued in the alliance with Hitler until the end of the war, reaping hundreds of millions of dollars in payments from the Nazi government to the Vatican.”
Jack Chick, infamous for his anti-Catholic comic books, tells us in Smokescreens, “When World War II ended, the Vatican had egg all over its face. Pope Pius XII, after building the Nazi war machine, saw Hitler losing his battle against Russia, and he immediately jumped to the other side when he saw the handwriting on the wall. . . . Pope Pius XII should have stood before the judges in Nuremberg. His war crimes were worthy of death.”
One is tempted simply to dismiss these accusations, so wildly out of touch with reality, as the deluded ravings of persons with no sense of historical truth. This would underestimate the power of such erroneous charges to influence people: Many take these writers at their word. Stepping out of the nightmare fantasyland of Hunt and Chick and back into sunlight of the real world, we discover that, not only was Pius XII no friend of the Nazis, but that his opposition to them began years before the War, before he was elected to the papacy, when he was still Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, the Vatican Secretary of State.
On April 28, 1935, four years before the War even started, Pacelli gave a speech that aroused the attention of the world press. Speaking to an audience of 250,000 pilgrims in Lourdes, France, the future Pius XII stated that the Nazis “are in reality only miserable plagiarists who dress up old errors with new tinsel. It does not make any difference whether they flock to the banners of social revolution, whether they are guided by a false concept of the world and of life, or whether they are possessed by the superstition of a race and blood cult.” It was talks like this, in addition to private remarks and numerous notes of protest that Pacelli sent to Berlin in his capacity as Vatican Secretary of State, that earned him a reputation as an enemy of the Nazi party.
AND THE GERMANS? The Germans were likewise displeased with the reigning pontiff, Pius XI, who showed himself to be a unrelenting opponent of the new German “ideals”—even writing an entire encyclical, Mit Brennender Sorge (1937), to condemn them. When Pius XI died in 1939, the Nazis abhorred the prospect that Pacelli might be elected his successor. Dr. Joseph Lichten, a Polish Jew who served as a diplomat and later an official of the Jewish Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, writes: “Pacelli had obviously established his position clearly, for the Fascist governments of both Italy and Germany spoke out vigorously against the possibility of his election to succeed Pius XI in March of 1939, though the cardinal secretary of state had served as papal nuncio in Germany from 1917 to 1929. . . . The day after his election, the Berlin Morgenpost said: ‘The election of cardinal Pacelli is not accepted with favor in Germany because he was always opposed to Nazism and practically determined the policies of the Vatican under his predecessor.’ ” Former Israeli diplomat and now Orthodox Jewish Rabbi Pinchas Lapide states that Pius XI “had good reason to make Pacelli the architect of his anti-Nazi policy. Of the forty-four speeches which the Nuncio Pacelli had made on German soil between 1917 and 1929, at least forty contained attacks on Nazism or condemnations of Hitler’s doctrines. . . . Pacelli, who never met the Führer, called it ‘neo-Paganism.’ ” A few weeks after Pacelli was elected pope, the German Reich’s Chief Security Service issued a then-secret report on the new Pope. Rabbi Lapide provides an excerpt: “Pacelli has already made himself prominent by his attacks on National Socialism during his tenure as Cardinal Secretary of State, a fact which earned him the hearty approval of the Democratic States during the papal elections. . . . How much Pacelli is celebrated as an ally of the Democracies is especially emphasized in the French Press.” Unfortunately, joy in the election of a strong pope who would continue Pius XI’s defiance of the Nazis was darkened by the ominous political developments in Europe. War finally came on September 1, 1939, when German troops overran Poland. Two days later Britain and France declared war on Germany. Early in 1940, Hitler made an attempt to prevent the new Pope from maintaining the anti-Nazi stance he had taken before his election. He sent his underling, Joachim von Ribbentrop, to try to dissuade Pius XII from following his predecessor’s policies. “Von Ribbentrop, granted a formal audience on March 11, 1940, went into a lengthy harangue on the invincibility of the Third Reich, the inevitability of a Nazi victory, and the futility of papal alignment with the enemies of the Führer. Pius XII heard von Ribbentrop out politely and impassively. Then he opened an enormous ledger on his desk and, in his perfect German, began to recite a catalogue of the persecutions inflicted by the Third Reich in Poland, listing the date, place, and precise details of each crime. The audience was terminated; the Pope’s position was clearly unshakable.” The Pope secretly worked to save as many Jewish lives as possible from the Nazis, whose extermination campaign began its most intense phase only after the War had started. It is here that the anti-Catholics try to make their hay: Pius XII is charged either with cowardly silence or with outright support of the Nazi extermination of millions of Jews. Much of the impetus to smear the Vatican regarding World War II came, appropriately enough, from a work of fiction—a stage play called The Deputy, written after the War by a little-known German Protestant playwright named Rolf Hochhuth. The play appeared in 1963, and it painted a portrait of a pope too timid to speak out publicly against the Nazis. Ironically, even Hochhuth admitted that Pius XII was materially very active in support of the Jews. Historian Robert Graham explains: “Playwright Rolf Hochhuth criticized the Pontiff for his (alleged) silence, but even he admitted that, on the level of action, Pius XII generously aided the Jews to the best of his ability. Today, after a quarter-century of the arbitrary and one-sided presentation offered the public, the word ‘silence’ has taken on a much wider connotation. It stands also for ‘indifference,’ ‘apathy,’ ‘inaction,’ and, implicitly, for anti-Semitism.” Hochhuth’s fictional image of a silent (though active) pope has been transformed by the anti-Catholic rumor mill into the image of a silent and inactive pope—and by some even into an actively pro-Nazi monster. If there were any truth to the charge that Pius XII was silent, the silence would not have been out of moral cowardice in the face of the Nazis, but because the Pope was waging a subversive, clandestine war against them in an attempt to save Jews. “The need to refrain from provocative public statements at such delicate moments was fully recognized in Jewish circles. It was in fact the basic rule of all those agencies in wartime Europe who keenly felt the duty to do all that was possible for the victims of Nazi atrocities and in particular for the Jews in proximate danger of deportation to ‘an unknown destination.’ ” The negative consequences of speaking out strongly were only too well known. “In one tragic instance, the Archbishop of Utrecht was warned by the Nazis not to protest the deportation of Dutch Jews. He spoke out anyway and in retaliation the Catholic Jews of Holland were sent to their death. One of them was the Carmelite philosopher, Edith Stein.” While the armchair quarterbacks of anti-Catholic circles may have wished the Pope to issue, in Axis territory and during wartime, ringing, propagandistic statements against the Nazis, the Pope realized that such was not an option if he were actually to save Jewish lives rather than simply mug for the cameras. The desire to keep a low profile was expressed by the people Pius XII helped. A Jewish couple from Berlin who had been held in concentration camps but escaped to Spain with the help of Pius XII, stated: “None of us wanted the Pope to take an open stand. We were all fugitives, and fugitives do not wish to be pointed at. The Gestapo would have become more excited and would have intensified its inquisitions. If the Pope had protested, Rome would have become the center of attention. It was better that the Pope said nothing. We all shared this opinion at the time, and this is still our conviction today.”
While the U.S., Great Britain, and other countries often refused to allow Jewish refugees to immigrate during the war, the Vatican was issuing tens of thousands of false documents to allow Jews to pass secretly as Christians so they could escape the Nazis.
What is more, the financial aid Pius XII helped provide the Jews was very real. Lichten, Lapide, and other Jewish chroniclers record those funds as being in the millions of dollars—dollars even more valuable then than they are now. In late 1943, Mussolini, who had been at odds with the papacy all through his tenure, was removed from power by the Italians, but Hitler, fearing Italy would negotiate a separate peace with the Allies, invaded, took control, and set up Mussolini again as a puppet ruler. It was in this hour, when the Jews of Rome themselves were threatened—those whom the Pope had the most direct ability to help—that Pius XII really showed his mettle.
Joseph Lichten records that on September 27, 1943, one of the Nazi commanders demanded of the Jewish community in Rome payment of one hundred pounds of gold within thirty-six hours or three hundred Jews would be taken prisoner. When the Jewish Community Council was only able to gather only seventy pounds of gold, they turned to the Vatican.
“In his memoirs, the then Chief Rabbi Zolli of Rome writes that he was sent to the Vatican, where arrangements had already been made to receive him as an ‘engineer’ called to survey a construction problem so that the Gestapo on watch at the Vatican would not bar his entry. He was met by the Vatican treasurer and secretary of state, who told him that the Holy Father himself had given orders for the deficit to be filled with gold vessels taken from the Treasury.” Pius XII also took a public stance concerning the Jews of Italy: “The Pope spoke out strongly in their defense with the first mass arrests of Jews in 1943, and L’Osservatore Romano carried an article protesting the internment of Jews and the confiscation of their property. The Fascist press came to call the Vatican paper ‘a mouthpiece of the Jews.’ ” Prior to the Nazi invasion, the Pope had been working hard to get Jews out of Italy by emigration; he now was forced to turn his attention to finding them hiding places. “The Pope sent out the order that religious buildings were to give refuge to Jews, even at the price of great personal sacrifice on the part of their occupants; he released monasteries and convents from the cloister rule forbidding entry into these religious houses to all but a few specified outsiders, so that they could be used as hiding places. Thousands of Jews—the figures run from 4,000 to 7,000—were hidden, fed, clothed, and bedded in the 180 known places of refuge in Vatican City, churches and basilicas, Church administrative buildings, and parish houses. Unknown numbers of Jews were sheltered in Castel Gandolfo, the site of the Pope’s summer residence, private homes, hospitals, and nursing institutions; and the Pope took personal responsibility for the care of the children of Jews deported from Italy.”
Rabbi Lapide records that “in Rome we saw a list of 155 convents and monasteries—Italian, French, Spanish, English, American, and also German—mostly extraterritorial property of the Vatican . . . which sheltered throughout the German occupation some 5,000 Jews in Rome.
No less than 3,000 Jews found refuge at one time at the Pope’s summer residence at Castel Gandolfo; sixty lived for nine months at the Jesuit Gregorian University, and half a dozen slept in the cellar of the Pontifical Bible Institute.” Notice in particular that the Pope was not merely allowing Jews to be hidden in different church buildings around Rome. He was hiding them in the Vatican itself and in his own summer home, Castel Gandolfo.
His success in protecting Italian Jews against the Nazis was remarkable. Lichten records that after the War was over it was determined that only 8,000 Jews were taken from Italy by the Nazis —far less than in other European countries. In June,1944, Pius XII sent a telegram to Admiral Miklos Horthy, the ruler of Hungary, and was able to halt the planned deportation of 800,000 Jews from that country. The Pope’s efforts did not go unrecognized by Jewish authorities, even during the War.
The Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, Isaac Herzog, sent the Pope a personal message of thanks on February 28, 1944, in which he said: “The people of Israel will never forget what His Holiness and his illustrious delegates, inspired by the eternal principles of religion which form the very foundations of true civilization, are doing for us unfortunate brothers and sisters in the most tragic hour of our history, which is living proof of divine Providence in this world.” Other Jewish leaders chimed in also.
Rabbi Safran of Bucharest, Romania, sent a note of thanks to the papal nuncio on April 7, 1944: “It is not easy for us to find the right words to express the warmth and consolation we experienced because of the concern of the supreme pontiff, who offered a large sum to relieve the sufferings of deported Jews. . . . The Jews of Romania will never forget these facts of historic importance.”
The Chief Rabbi of Rome, Israel Zolli, also made a statement of thanks: “What the Vatican did will be indelibly and eternally engraved in our hearts. . . . Priests and even high prelates did things that will forever be an honor to Catholicism.”
After the war, Zolli became a Catholic and, to honor the Pope for what he had done for the Jews and the role he had played in Zolli’s conversion, took the name “Eugenio”—the Pope’s given name—as his own baptismal name. Zolli stressed that his conversion was for theological reasons, which was certainly true, but the fact that the Pope had worked so hard on behalf of the Jews no doubt played a role in inspiring him to look at the truths of Christianity.
Lapide writes: “When Zolli accepted baptism in 1945 and adopted Pius’s Christian name of Eugene, most Roman Jews were convinced that his conversion was an act of gratitude for wartime succor to Jewish refugees and, repeated denials not withstanding, many are still of his opinion.
Thus, Rabbi Barry Dov Schwartz wrote in the summer issue, 1964, of Conservative Judaism: ‘Many Jews were persuaded to convert after the war, as a sign of gratitude, to that institution which had saved their lives.’ ” In Three Popes and the Jews Lapide estimated the total number of Jews that had been spared as a result of Pius XII’s throwing the Church’s weight into the clandestine struggle to save them.
After totaling the numbers of Jews saved in different areas and deducting the numbers saved by other causes, such as the praiseworthy efforts of some European Protestants, “The final number of Jewish lives in whose rescue the Catholic Church had been the instrument is thus at least 700,000 souls, but in all probability it is much closer to . . . 860,000.” This is a total larger than all other Jewish relief organizations in Europe, combined, were able to save.
Lapide calculated that Pius XII and the Church he headed constituted the most successful Jewish aid organization in all of Europe during the war, dwarfing the Red Cross and all other aid societies. This fact continued to be recognized when Pius XII died in 1958.
Lapide’s book records the eulogies of a number of Jewish leaders concerning the Pope, and far from agreeing with Jack Chick that he deserved death because of his “war crimes,” Jewish leaders praised the man highly:
“We share the grief of the world over the death of His Holiness Pius XII. . . . During the ten years of Nazi terror, when our people passed through the horrors of martyrdom, the Pope raised his voice to condemn the persecutors and to commiserate with their victims”
(Golda Meir, Israeli representative to the U.N. and future prime minister of Israel).
“With special gratitude we remember all he has done for the persecuted Jews during one of the darkest periods in their entire history” (Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress). “More than anyone else, we have had the opportunity to appreciate the great kindness, filled with compassion and magnanimity, that the Pope displayed during the terrible years of persecution and terror” (Elio Toaff, Chief Rabbi of Rome, following Rabbi Zolli’s conversion).
Finally, let us conclude with a quotation from Lapide’s record that was not given at the death of Pius XII, but was given after the War by the most well-known Jewish figure of this century, Albert Einstein: “Only the Catholic Church protested against the Hitlerian onslaught on liberty. Up till then I had not been interested in the Church, but today I feel a great admiration for the Church, which alone has had the courage to struggle for spiritual truth and moral liberty.”
WHAT ABOUT THE ANTI SEMITISM?
The story was built around the leak of an unpublished document dated October 23, 1946, supposedly drafted by the Holy Office and approved by Pius XII and sent to Archbishop Angelo Roncalli (the future Pope John XXIII), then-nuncio to France, regarding Jewish children who found refuge in Catholic homes and institutions. Jewish officials were requesting their return. The note in question was unsigned, the author is unknown, and it was not on Vatican letterhead. Curiously, the text was not in Italian (as was customary for Vatican communications to its nuncios) but in French, making more apparent that it lacked any official status as a message from the Holy Office or Vatican Secretariat of State. The French text boasted seemingly explosive and horrendous instructions:
With regard to the Jewish children who, during the German occupation, have been entrusted to Catholic institutions and families and whom Jewish institutions are reclaiming to be entrusted to them, the Holy Congregation of the Holy Office has taken a decision that can be summarized as follows:
Avoid, as much as possible, to answer in writing to Jewish authorities, but do it orally.
Each time that it will be necessary to respond, it must be said that the Church must make its inquiries to study each case separately.
The children who have been baptized could not be entrusted to institutions that would not be in a position to ensure their Christian education.
For the children who have lost their relatives, given that the Church looked after them, it would not be appropriate that they would be abandoned by the Church or entrusted to persons who have no rights over them, at least until they are in a position to dispose of themselves. This, obviously, for the children who would not have been baptized.
If the children were entrusted by relatives, and if the relatives reclaim them now, inasmuch as the children have not been baptized, they can be returned to them.
It is to be noted that this decision of the Holy Congregation of the Holy Office has been approved by the Holy Father.
This document was immediately seized upon by media and declared proof positive of the pontiff’s rampant anti-Semitism and indifference. On December 29, the Guardian newspaper in England added, “The letter deals a new and crushing blow to the reputation of the wartime pope, Pius XII.” On January 9, 2005, the New York Times presented its own article on the basis of the “discovery,” essentially repeating the charges made by Melloni, and placed on its web site an English version of the French letter under the title “1946 Letter from the Vatican.” But within days of the original article in Corriere della Sera, the entire story was proved to be based on a dubious piece of evidence. Leading the charge were two of Italy’s leading experts on Pius XII, Andrea Tornielli and Matteo L. Napolitano, co-authors of Il Papa che salvo gli Ebrei (The Pope Who Saved the Jews). In a front-page article for the January 11 edition of Il Giornale, Tornielli published the original Vatican document and compared it to the French translation. In the same issue of Il Giornale, Napolitano castigated Melloni for his erroneous and misleading use of the memo.
As revealed by Tornielli, the controversial text proved to be only one page of a three-page document. The other two pages were attached in the archives but were never revealed by Melloni or the New York Times. Page 2 is a typewritten memo from Msgr. Tardini of Holy Office to the Apostolic Nunciature in Paris entitled “The problem of Jewish children welcomed by Catholic charities during the war.” The letter is dated September 28, 1946, and it reads as follows:
The Most Eminent Fathers decided that if possible, there should be no response to the request of the Grand Rabbi of Jerusalem. In any event, if it is necessary to say something, it should be done orally, given the danger of abuse and distortion of anything written from the Holy See on the subject. Eventually, it will be necessary to explain that the Church must do its own research and observations in order to discern case by case, it being evident that children who were baptized cannot be entrusted to institutions that cannot guarantee their Christian education. Furthermore, also those children who were not baptized and who no longer have living relatives, having been entrusted to the Church who received them, as long as they are not able to decide for themselves, they cannot be abandoned by the Church or delivered to parties who have no right to them. It would be something else if the children were requested by their relatives. The decision of the Eminent Fathers and the criteria here presented were referred to the Holy Father in an audience of March 28, and His Holiness deigned to provide his august approval.
The third page is also a typewritten letter and bears the same reference number (4516) and date as page 2 and the notation of the Apostolic Nunciature of France. In French, it reads:
With regard to the Jewish children who, during the German occupation, have been entrusted to Catholic institutions and families and whom Jewish institutions are reclaiming to be entrusted to them, the Holy Congregation of the Holy Office has taken a decision that is here reported in its entirety.
It then repeats the memo on page 2 in Italian, and at the bottom is a note in French: “Excerpt of a letter of His Excellency Msgr. Tardini dated September 28, 1946 Prot. 6972/46.” As the complete three-page document shows, Tardini sent a letter to Roncalli on September 28, 1946, regarding the Holy Office’s response to requests from Jewish Institutions (but not families) asking for the Jewish children. The memo makes clear that if Jewish children were reclaimed by family members, these children—whether baptized or not—were to be reunited with their Jewish families. (The original three-page document can be viewed at www.vaticanfiles.net/intelligence2.htm.) Clearly missing in the Italian original is the most inflammatory point in the French text, namely, that unbaptized children cannot be returned to their families. In truth, Pope Pius had approved the decision that Jewish children were to be returned to their families regardless of their baptismal status. But that didn’t stop Melloni, who claimed to have discovered the poor French translation while suppressing the real documents on which it was loosely based. Pius XII, as Rychlak wrote on Beliefnet.com, “was being framed.”
Accuracy In Media released Sherrie Gossett’s article ” New York Times Publicizes Phony Memo from the Pope’s Pope,” which castigated the newspaper for its poor research and asked, “Are New York Times staffers now under the impression the Vatican is in Paris? Or perhaps they think Rome is in Paris?” Newsmax.com, a conservative news outlet, also detailed the egregious episode. But even after the complete refutation of the lies in the Melloni and Times articles, the war against the Pope (and the papacy) continued. National Public Radio gave a platform to Melloni to repeat his false charges on its All Things Considered (January 21, 2005) but failed to mention the articles in Il Giornale or present an opposing opinion. The New Republic, in its January 31 edition, permitted anti-papal polemicist Daniel Goldhagen to repeat his wild claims of a Catholic conspiracy to kidnap Jewish children. Still, the rapidity of the exposure of the original articles’ distortions is evidence that the truth is being heard. Credit goes to scholars such as Rychlak, Gumpel, and others, but the episode also points to the long road ahead for historical Catholic apologetics. The task now is to develop even more effective means of Catholic social communications to respond immediately to the attacks and be proactive in making broadly known the truth of Pope Pius XII’s record and the heroic deeds of the Church during World War II to save tens of thousands of Jews from the Nazis.
Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem, remarkably updated its exhibit in 2012, saying condemnations of Pius XII’s wartime record are now “a matter of controversy among scholars.” In addition, in 2015 Mark Riebling published his important book Church of Spies: The Pope’s Secret War Against Hitler, which, “in thorough research and documentation,” summarizes Jewish Week, “shows that Pius XII, rather than being an acquiescent enabler of the Nazis’ genocidal designs, was an active participant in an intrigue whose goal was the assassination of the Fuhrer.” In 1999, four Jesuit priests analyzed the entire wartime archives, and the publication of their work, Pius XII and the Second World War: According to the Archives of the Vatican, providentially coincided to serve as a riposte to Hitler’s Pope. When these same archives are opened in March 2020 to all scholars, expect Pius XII and his Jewish contemporaries to be further vindicated, the spin of the pontiff’s critics notwithstanding.
Any questions?

2020.05.06 01:56 recklessnowleopard Life is so complicated, could really use some help.

TL;DR at the end. 24, M.
When I was in my first year of college, one of my 'friends' started spreading lies about me. Let's call him Edward. He was a part of a group of toxic friends that I had up until a few years ago. I believe some of them held a bit of a grudge against me for checking out their 'girlfriends' profiles on Facebook (Edward got my password in first year of college). The thing is they weren't in serious relationships, I didn't even know they were dating. Also, Edward was the person who was most upset by this. I only realised recently how insecure of a person he is.
Second year of college was going well for me academically, and this upset Edward even more. That's when the lies got downright brutal. One of my other friends Troy told me a 'rumour' about someone who was a good friend of his but I didn't know as well. Let's call him Jim. Troy said that Jim was raped at a house party that had happened almost a year ago at my friend's house. Troy was smiling the entire time he told me. Smiling. That his friend was raped. Wtf. I knew this had to be another one of Edwards schemes. They must have been going around saying that I raped Jim. It was so retarded I was sure nobody would believe it, but it wouldn't stop people from talking. The friend of mine who had the house party was a part of a group of college friends that I had made in first year so I presume this lie was to start to disrupt my social life outside of this toxic group of friends. I saw all of these antics as really insecure and petty to be honest. Since I'm not a gossip, I had no clue how much all of this was going to interfere in my life.
Right when second semester of second year had rolled around, the toxic friends introduced me to some new people. We'll call them the 'townies'. These guys were rough. They had dozens of criminal offences they were being charged for between them and they were starting to hang around at my friend Ryan's house (the one who threw the party). There is a ‘party week’ in my college where everybody goes crazy and takes drugs all week. During this week, A LOT of comments were made around me that made me understand how badly all of these lies were affecting my life. I understood that week that these ‘townies’ were hired to bring harm to me. One of them in particular was in a lot of debt, and so I put two and two together; he needed money from my toxic friends to keep his kneecaps.
I finally had enough of the situation and tried to get out of my friend's house towards the end of the week, they wouldn't let me go anywhere alone. I had to text my brother and tell him to come down to the house so that we could go to the ATM for him to lend me some money. My brother walks into the house with the money and I hear someone say "oh shit we can't that's his brother". At that point I didn't care if he had the money there, I just walked towards the door telling my brother "let's go", acting as if I needed more (I hadn’t asked for much anyway).
We get back to my brother's house and I tell him about all of the retards that had been spreading lies about me, for what I now understand, was since my first year of college. He neglected the fact that they had spiked me, instead he asked me; “If there was one lie that you felt they were using against you what would it be?” I tell him the lie that Troy told me about Jim. He immediately goes downstairs and starts talking to his roommate. My brother was being weird at this point, but I figured he just wanted to let his roommate know what was up. When he got back upstairs, he kept going on about mental disorders saying that he had issues with them in the past, that he had studied them. I try not to think negatively about people with mental disorders, but knowing that was not what I was going through, I was pretty furious. The last thing I needed was for people to go around saying that I was crazy. Since my brother didn't listen I decided to keep my friends close and my enemies closer and kept hanging around at Ryan's house.
(Excuse the digression, the following narration is only necessary because the people in my life are so shitty that the context will get confusing otherwise):
Since then my brother continued to ignore the lying dickheads, started gossiping about the lies to his friends, stole my idea to invest my mother's 250,000 euro settlement in Bitcoin (don't know exactly when but somewhere between 2016-17) realized he is the cuntiest of brothers for doing so, and continued to push the whole mental disorder thing. He even shouted at me on mother's day of all days "stop talking about Bitcoin recklessnowleopard" (which at the time was the best investment opportunity going). Things only got worse.
In late July 2017, my brother and I were walking drunk along the river in my hometown when he said he wanted to stop and look at it. The river is notoriously dangerous, and he knew the scumbags that were hanging around at Ryan’s house had made references to throwing people in there while they were around me. He said: "She looks awful powerful tonight".
"Sure does", I replied.
"Not many people who go in there come out you know", he said next.
I was shocked. How the fuck could he say that? Especially when there was a 200% increase in 'suicides' via the river right around the time that all of these criminals were talking about throwing people in. He didn't just disrespect them, he showed me that he didn't care at all about my mental health. Then he said: "There's plenty of them in Utrecht". Cunt. That's where I was going on a study abroad semester. Now he was really fucking with my head.
After this I didn't want to have anything to do with my brother, but my mother would not listen to anything I was telling her. I had proved many times that he was acting crazy, lying to me and her, involving his friends in his lies, putting my life at risk. Nothing was right. I started seeing a psychologist (which was going very well) and while we were having a group session with my Mom, I mentioned the price of Bitcoin, that it was now 4000 euro. My mom's jaw dropped. This is when I realized that my Mom went through the same sequence as my brother. She started to gossip and then couldn't admit to being a shit mother, and my investment idea made a shit-ton of money, and they freaked out. Mom said in that meeting that she was “never, ever going to come back for another one”, and now wanted me to go to a mental health unit, or psych-ward, for "at least three months". What a bitch. She got her wish in the end after lying to my GP.
The psychiatrists did absolutely nothing but keep me there for three weeks which ruined my first semester back at college. Then my brother hired a bunch of hackers to ruin my semester abroad in the Netherlands. I was forced to drop out of college in the Netherlands and find work. I once again went the 'keep your friends close and enemies closer' route and somewhat befriended the hackers (one of them also owed me money). It didn't work out quite as well this time around since they were able to ruin two jobs that I enjoyed, but I needed something that would help get me out of this situation for good. In the end, I was drugged with crack, or some form of amphetamines, and ended up in a canal. This happened on my brother's fucking birthday (almost a year to the day from when he said “there’s plenty of them in Utrecht”. I can't recall exactly how I ended up in the canal, but I remember thinking that my roommate from where I was living in the Netherlands was in the canal and needed help. Whatever I was drugged with made things hazy though. I regained my senses in a hospital bed surrounded by doctor's, nurses, policemen, all speaking Dutch and freaking me the fuck out. I eventually calmed down and the world started to make sense again.
The next day they wanted a 24 hour urine sample and gave me a catheter. Fuck catheters. I stayed one more day and then I really wanted to leave. I noticed that they had my name down wrong on my wrist band so I decided to just gather my things and walk out of there. The Dutch doctor's looked at me as if to say 'where in the fuck do you think you're going as I was striding down the corridor. "That's not how you spell my last name and so technically I have not been admitted properly here. I'm leaving". The Dutch usually finding it difficult to disagree with anything rational, they let me walk on.
I strode nervously passed the security guards on the bottom floor who flew past me smiling on electric scooters (Dutch people), and walked out into the open area of the city called the ‘Uitof’. It was around a fifteen minutes cycle back to the city centre, (the Uitof is a strangely built up section of the city I was staying in that is somewhat detached from the rest). I was dreading what was bound to be around a forty minute walk, possibly more, when I saw an old tattered bike that was left unlocked. In the Netherlands, these bikes are actually okay to take. I hopped on it and started making my way back to the city centre. It broke about half way. Just my luck.
I eventually got back to the hostel that I was staying at when I first moved to the Netherlands and the receptionist was nice enough to let me stay there a while. I was beginning to make a plan to sort out my life. I still had enough money to get back to my home country. I was not about to do that before getting a prostitute though, since the lies that had been told about me for what was at that time 3-4 years had stopped me from losing my virginity. Then my family showed up and got me admitted to another mental health unit. I spent three weeks in that mental health unit, and was only allowed to go home under the conditions that my psychiatrist back home, who had been contacted by the mental health unit in Utrecht, contacted me when I arrived back.
When I got back home my psychiatrist from my home country refused to meet with me or even get on the phone with me. The social worker of the mental health unit in my hometown contacted me continuously though. He had an uncertainty in his voice every time I got on the phone with him. He said that since I had been unadmitted from the mental health unit in the Netherlands, I was not a being treated under the mental health act in my home country. Why were they calling me then?
I tried to get back to college to finish my final year but I did not want to live at home with my mother who was the one who allowed my brother to steal my idea to invest. My brother and mother are both massive gossips, most in my country are, and so by this time it was obvious to me my brother used the lie that Troy had told me to go around and lie about his little brother for his toxic friends so that nobody would know that I went to him for help and he fucked up. Cunt. I thought maybe they were just waiting till I finished college to tell me they invested, and that it was my friends who organised the attempted murder. All of this stress led to an argument with my Mom which led to me being admitted to the mental health unit again.
I eventually got back to college and am currently receiving great marks. Second semester has just started and I am doing okay but things are a bit stressful. I received a message from one of the people that I met in the Netherlands saying that they were sorry if they brought me any harm. They are so far the only person out of all the dickheads that have tried to lie me to death to apologise, so I accepted knowing they were lied to and didn't start the lies so it's not as bad. I responded saying that I know the people who are really at fault and it's enough to hate them. Then they said that the receptionist at the hostel (that my brother booked) is one of the people I should hate. That I didn’t expect. She was a nice woman, but this made my rethink how suggestable, susceptible; vulnerable that people are.
I took my time with this information but eventually I went to the college councillors with it. They wouldn't record the evidence. WTF. Then I went to the police liaison at my college with the evidence. She started to bullshit about how it wasn't clear to her what link there was to my brother. I told her again that he booked the hostel, and that the message clearly shows that the receptionist was part of a group of people who brought harm to me (drugs + canal), and that this mysteriously happened on his birthday, almost exactly a year after he essentially threatened me or at least "predicted" that I would end up in a canal in Utrecht. The liaison is in denial, even about the spike in 'suicides' in 2016. She argued about the yearly figures and then back tracked when I brought up Q1 2016. There is no doubt she and the counsellor at the college both took bribes. She also called my other (half) siblings, who also followed the path of cunt, and were now committed to sharing stealing my idea.
The liaison eventually told me she would contact Interpol because since I was drugged in the Netherlands it wasn't for her to deal with. That would have been ‘fair enough’, had she not set up what was essentially an ambush. They were trying to admit me to the hospital again. The liaison is a former psychiatric nurse. Go figure. This time however, I knew my rights well enough and they only got me in to see a psychiatrist who had to let me go even though he tried desperately to admit me.
By now my whole greedy cunting family is acting like my toxic friends, and the situation is at a point where it has reached an exponential point of anxiety and pressure; I don’t really feel it seeing as it is so bad already that any new anxiety or pressure is comparatively nothing. It is only a matter of time before they are fucked. My other brother even said in the meeting with the liaison that "plenty of people have their ideas stolen". It was as good as an admission of guilt if only the cunt of a police woman didn't take a fucking bribe.
Now my original psychiatrist is asking if I have "spoken to any other agencies". She has tried to admit me again and said that she will "organize an involuntary admission" which is illegal. She is shitting bricks since she got the situation wrong and I think now is the best time for me to finally get out of this shitty situation but everyone I go to for help is taking bribes (I'd assume the hackers have something to do with that). What would you guys do?
Tl;dr: Toxic friends lie about me, brother starts gossiping about the lies. Then brother steals my idea to invest 250,000 euro in Bitcoin and tries to have me killed on his birthday by drugging me with crack and hoping that I would drown in a canal after 'predicting' it a year before. Now he is using the money from my idea to bribe everyone I go to for help.

2020.04.29 15:40 optimalg The Eredivisie 2006/2007 Final Match Day: the story of three virtual champions in 90 minutes.

It's April 29, 2007. One day before Queen's Day, the Dutch national holiday. Kaká is the best footballer in the world, Hot Fuzz has just been released in theaters, people are wearing Crocs unironically and it's the final matchday of the Eredivisie. This year is a highly anticipated finale, as no less than three teams have a chance to become champions. All three of them have 72 points going into this round and the goal differences are minimal. But only one of them will take an oversized tin plate with basic lettering home.

The Players

Going into the final matchday, the top 3 is as follows:
AZ have by far the best chances to win it all. Bankrolled by Dirk Scheringa, the Alkmaar side had a very promising project going on at the time. The goal was to break the hegemony of the classic top 3 in Dutch football, with a UEFA Cup semifinal in 2005 as a proof of concept. This goal attracted an extraordinary amount of talent in management and football administration, such as Marcel Brands and Toon Gerbrands, but most importantly they managed to convince Louis van Gaal to join. Van Gaal combined young talent (Moussa Dembélé, Ryan Donk, Jeremain Lens) with established players (Tim de Cler, Barry Opdam, Simon Cziommer, Shota Arveladze) to create an immensely successful side. Leading with a goal difference of +53 (6 more than the runner-up), all they need is to win away against Excelsior, who are in 16th place and were already certain to play promotion/relegation playoffs. The mood among fans was great, one fan even had a championship tattoo on his leg made. It literally cannot go wrong for them.
That runner-up was Ajax, who weren't having a particularly memorable season. Management had been a mess ever since Ronald Koeman left in 2005, with coaches being replaced every year until Frank de Boer arrived in 2011. This year they were coached by Henk ten Cate, who was brought in with a lot of media hype and came with great expectations, that were only partially fulfilled. There was an embarrassing home loss against FC Copenhagen that kicked Ajax out of the CL qualifiers, but things certainly improved compared to the season before. Second place just wouldn't do though. There was also a lot of drama: Kenneth Perez received a five match suspension after he called a linesman the N-word, one week later both Wesley Sneijder and Henk ten Cate were sent off because they had abused the referee, and Ten Cate almost ruined Jan Vertonghen's Ajax career because Vertonghen scored against Ajax while on loan at RKC. All in all a not terrible, but not great season, that hopefully would result in at least the cup (the final against AZ was a week later). To win the Eredivisie, though? What they would need to do is absolutely smash Willem II away (who had a terrible season and were in 15th place, just above relegation) and hope for a miracle performance by Excelsior.
And then there was PSV. Oh, PSV. They had actually been leading the table the week before and could have put the championship in the bag against Utrecht, but they bottled it and the match ended 1-1. Now their excellent season was very likely to end in absolutely nothing. It all started so well for them: they had an 11 point lead after 20 rounds, they made it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League after beating Arsenal. Their defence was the best of the season, especially thanks to Heurelho Gomes and Alex "the Tank", but their squad in general was nothing to sneeze at either. Their starters included Timmy Simons, Carlos Salcido, Jefferson Farfan and Philip Cocu, the latter in his final season at PSV, and their manager was Ronald Koeman. Even though the 11 point lead gradually shrunk and they eventually lost that quarterfinal to Liverpool, they managed to hold on to first place. Until that penultimate round put them in third place on goal difference, that is. Now all they can hope for is for AZ to fuck up while they have to beat Vitesse, who are 12th. And even then they have to score more than Ajax does against Willem II.
Or, to summarize, the table as the Eredivisie entered the final round:
G W D L GF-GA GD Pts
1 AZ 33 21 9 3 81-28 53 72
2 Ajax 33 22 6 5 82-35 47 72
3 PSV 33 22 6 5 70-24 46 72

The Matches

It's bound to be one of the most exciting days in Dutch sporting history. Anything can happen, although one AZ fan was absolutely certain of what the outcome would be. The KNVB, however, prepared for every possible result. The original trophy went to the AZ game, with two copies of the trophy going to Ajax and PSV's match. Thousands of fans went to the stadium to see these three matches live, bringing six-packs for the pregame and their lucky underwear. Of the three teams, only PSV play at home, but there's plenty of away fans in the home ends of the other matches. Several Excelsior fans sold their season ticket to AZ fans for hundreds, risking a stadium ban if caught. But most importantly, many are carrying a portable radio. Because it's 2007 and the first iPhone wouldn't be released until 2 months later, the only way for most match goers to follow the other matches was through NOS Langs de Lijn, Radio 1's live sports program. So turn on Quincy Jones' Chump Change, cause it's time for a radio report.
0' - At kickoff, AZ are naturally the virtual champions. They would hold this position until...
8' - GOAL PSV. Alex heads in the 1-0 via a corner by Edison Mendez. PSV lead, for now.
10' - GOAL PSV. Farfan scores the 2-0 barely two minutes later! Looks like we're in for a major surprise today.
13' - Never mind. GOAL VITESSE. Theo Janssen makes it 2-1. It's been a very interesting first few minutes though. And it's about to get even more interesting due to a...
18' - RED CARD AZ. Goalkeeper Boy Waterman is sent off after bringing down Andwele Slory and Excelsior is given a penalty. This wouldn't be taken until after...
18' - GOAL AJAX. Urby Emanuelson scores the 0-1 in Tilburg. Ajax lead the table on goal difference.
21' - GOAL EXCELSIOR. Luigi Bruins converts the penalty and AZ are now 0-1 behind with a man down. Things are looking very bad.
24' - GOAL AZ. They're not dead yet! Simon Cziommer equalizes, signaling that you shouldn't count them out already.
45' - HALF TIME. All three matches kind of fizzled out after Cziommer's goal, with almost no notable moments. AZ are in a tougher predicament than expected, Ajax on the other hand aren't having a particularly hard day so far. But of the three, it's PSV that's playing the best. If they manage to score more in the second half, they have a real chance at the title. But for now, Ajax are still the virtual champions.
59' - GOAL PSV. Ibrahim Afellay scores the 3-1, after Farfan had hit the post 10 minutes earlier. Ajax are still ahead on the table, though. On goals scored.
60' - GOAL EXCELSIOR. Henrico Drost puts Excelsior 2-1 ahead from outside the box. It initially hit the crossbar but the linesman saw it go over the line. AZ are out of the race again.
65' - GOAL PSV. Jefferson Farfan scores his second goal of the game and PSV lead the table once more.
69' - GOAL AJAX. Eindhoven enjoyed that lead for barely 4 minutes. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scores the 0-2. Ajax lead the table again and have secured the three points. But will the goal difference tie breaker be enough?
71' - GOAL AZ. And AZ have a chance again! Infamous super sub Danny Koevermans equalizes with 20 minutes to go. It's still possible.
75' - RED CARD EXCELSIOR. Finally things are actually turning around for AZ. René van Dieren gets his second yellow card, making it 10 vs 10. They just need one goal to be back on top.
77' - GOAL PSV. 5-1! Philip Cocu scores the possible season winner in his final match for PSV. The Philips Stadium goes insane, it's a storybook ending. If things go on like this, that is. PSV lead.
90' - GOAL EXCELSIOR. It's all over for AZ after all. Johan Voskamp scores the 3-2 in the final minute of regular time. Only Ajax can still keep PSV from their third consecutive title, but they need just one more goal.
90'+ - FINAL WHISTLE. Against all odds, PSV are Eredivisie champions! The 5-1 is just enough to stay above Ajax, who have to settle for second place. AZ had a horrible bottle job and end in third place. Eindhoven goes into full party mode and Stratumseind is bound to have a Queen's Night to not remember.
The final table:
G W D L GF-GA GD Pts
1 PSV 34 23 6 5 75-25 50 75
2 Ajax 34 23 6 5 84-35 49 75
3 AZ 34 21 9 4 83-31 52 72

Aftermath

Three million people tuned in to the radio broadcast that day, on a population of 16 million. The full broadcast was later released in its entirety on CD, and can also be found in this playlist.
Ajax won the cup a week later, beating AZ after a 1-1 draw and penalties. They would meet two more times in the playoffs, where they played for a ticket to the CL preliminary round. This one was also won by Ajax (4-3 on aggregate), leaving AZ with nothing more than a UEFA Cup ticket and one of the worst unravelings of a season you could have.
The AZ fan has since put a tribal over the date. He'd eventually see his team win the Eredivisie in 2009.

2020.04.22 10:37 owenbc44 Question about SSH and courses

Hi I'm going to Utrecht in the Fall for an exchange semester. I was hopping to get a SSH room. I see on the website there is a registration date (April 29th) and a booking date (May 26th). I was told I should be on the website as soon as it opens, is that for the registration date or the booking date or both?
Also, is there anyone here studying computer science or math I can pm about course selection?

My landlord is a bit of a dick hole...Advice please 😊
Hi there,
First time poster long time lurker. This might be a bit long but thanks for taking the time to read.
I’m a biochem student studying in the Netherlands and my landlord has been the absolute worst. I’m wondering what are the steps I can take to get some sort of compensation for the ludicrousness of the situation that I’m enduring and whether or not it’s worth paying a lawyer for?
Background:
On the first of November I moved to a small village outside of Utrecht to be closer to my internship. My landlord told me that I wasn’t allowed to register at my address until the end of the year because of issues he was having with the government (red flag #1) but I was desperate and needed somewhere to move or else I’d be having issues with my internship.
At the time I was living with my sister and she obliged to keep me registered under her address until this blows over at my current address.
At the beginning of the year, I want to say the 4th or 5th of January I asked what was the update on the possibility of registration because my sister was moving out of the country at the end of January and I would no longer be able to register under her address. He then went on to say at the earliest I would be able to register would be April which is the end date of my contract anyways.
Fast forward to February , my landlord sends me a watsapp message saying that if anyone (government inspector) comes to the house, I’m to tell them that I am friends of the downstairs neighbors and I’m staying with them for a while. I have never had a full conversation with those people. At most we’ve exchanged a few text messages but that was mostly about garbage disposal. Needless to say I did not feel comfortable with that.
At a later date in February, he then informs me via verbal conversation that a government inspector will be coming to take a look at the house and he would have to remove the stove from the kitchen for about two weeks. He asked me to take my things that were in eyesight and move to the closet in the hall and to the vacant room which I complied with.
When I came home from work that Thursday I went to the fridge to prepare my dinner and to my surprise all of my food stuffs were gone. I checked the closet in the hall and my stuff in there were also all gone including the storage container I keep my cat food in. I sent him a message the following day (I was TIRED and it was late) asking him where my things were. He then responded that he doesn’t know where they were and that he would have to take a look (he had someone else come into the house and remove my stuff as well as lock my room door).
It’s been over a month that I’ve gone without a stove to the point where I’ve had to purchase my own mini table top induction cook plate. To this day my things have not been returned (it’s been over a month). I’ve sent several emails to which he has stopped responding. I’ve gone over my contract and spoken with a lawyer in passing. The very first article of my contract states that I have access to a kitchen, all be it a functional one. The seventh article of the contract touches on privacy of which has obviously been broken.
I’ve already looked into the juridisch loket in my city as well as the Huur Commisie but you cannot look into getting monetary compensation from them. They only make rulings based on the information.
Given the information provided , is it worth hiring a lawyer to help with this problem or should I just leave it alone. I’m already in the process of finding a place to live but because of the virus, this might take some time but I really don’t want to have to be here any longer for my own sanity.
Thanks for taking the time. If there are any questions I’m definitely here to answer.
TLDR: landlord won’t let me register, removed my things (that are still missing) and haven’t had a functioning stove to use in over a month. Is it worth going to a lawyer?

2020.04.03 11:33 JoepDohmen Tips Voor Het Kiezen Van Een Geschikt Webdesign Bureau In Utrecht Voor Uw Website

Tips Voor Het Kiezen Van Een Geschikt Webdesign Bureau In Utrecht Voor Uw Website
